7/13/06 Progress Report

The exterior of the Science Center is nearly complete and is beginning to complement its sibling, the Technology Center. Most of the electrical, plumbing, heating and air systems have been installed, with nearly half of the interior dry wall and painting also complete. Workers will begin the installation of laboratory equipment and cabinetry in the next few weeks.

The project is roughly a month ahead of schedule, which may allow for construction to end in December. This will allow for commissioning and final acceptance during December and January. Then, furniture, computers, and other equipment can be installed during the 2007 winter and spring quarters.

1/4/06 Progress Report

The 75,000 sq. ft. Science Center is taking shape, with the installation of structural steel now over 75% complete. Site work including grading, storm detention systems, sanitary sewer systems, and under-slab infrastructures, has been installed along with concrete foundations and slabs.

Construction is on schedule to be completed on time in December, 2006, followed by commissioning and final acceptance. An extensive move-in process for science and health science programs currently located in SMT, ST and OEB will follow after the first of the year.

10/12/05 Progress Report

Construction of the new 75,000 square foot Science Center continues on schedule as crews install underground utilities, pour concrete foundations and first floor slabs.  Taking advantage of fair weather during the summer and early fall, the contractor has worked in dry soils allowing for the most efficient construction methods.

Installation of the storm detention system in G lot continues to disrupt traffic flows and impact parking.  However, the contractor is working feverishly to complete that work before the winter rains arrive.  Completion of that work and the re-opening of the parking lot and traffic lanes are scheduled for mid December.

8/15/05 Progress Report

After much anticipation, Bayley Construction, General Contractor for the new Science Center is preparing the site for the building.

Through this new Science Center, the college will continue to deliver the accredited science and health science programs that keep GRCC current with industry and marketplace demands. Given the poor condition of the existing facilities, there will be operational cost savings as the new facility meets current energy standards and is equipped with new energy efficient mechanical and electrical systems. The new building will centralize the college’s ‘wet lab’ science programs, to include chemistry, physics, astronomy, life sciences, geology, and health sciences within one facility.

The current Science and Technology (ST) complex and the Occupational Education Building (OEB are no longer able to meet the needs of GRCC’s instructional science and health science programs. The lack of adequate labs and classrooms for these programs is further aggravated by the increasing FTE demands from a rapidly expanding community population base.

A Science Design Team, comprised of GRCC instructors, administrative staff, and facilities personnel, along with a consultant team led by S.M. Stemper Architects, determined the scope, program, and budget for this new 75,000 square foot Science Center.

3/17/05 Progress Report

King County continues to review our architectural and engineering plans as they prepare to issue the necessary construction permit later this spring.  We have submitted our request for funds and the legislature plans to consider it during the current session.  If approved, we should have the funds shortly after July 1, 2005.  This will allow us to begin construction during the dry summer months.

Construction plans and specifications are in the final stages of development in preparation for the Advertisement for Bid scheduled for early April, 2005.  The construction contract will be awarded contingent upon state funding approval.

You may have seen a Public Notice posted at the Campus Corner Apartments entrance to the campus and wondered what it meant.  As part of the permit process for the new Science Center, King County requires a public notice of land use action.  Along with this notice, the college recently submitted plans to the county for review and ultimate issuance of a construction permit.  The permit process takes several months and will likely be concluded in late spring, 2005.  The appropriation of funds for constructing the 75,000 square foot facility will be submitted for legislative approval during the upcoming session and with approval, become available July 1, 2005, in time for a mid-summer construction start.  The new facility will be located on the west end of the new Technology Center with a second floor sky bridge connecting both buildings.

Concurrent with the permitting process, the Science Center Design Team  has had several user group meetings this fall with the S. M. Stemper design team to finalize interior layouts, fixtures, furnishings, and equipment for the various classrooms, labs, and support functions.

05/19/04 Progress Report

The Science Center Design Team has put in extensive time and effort over the last six months. Numerous faculty meetings with architects and lab planners have resulted in the design of instructional spaces that are intended to meet the current and future needs of our Science and Health Science programs.

A concerted effort has also been made to incorporate sustainable design features and aggressive energy efficiency measures.

The design process is on schedule for a projected construction start in August, 2005, pending state funding. Construction should be completed in December, 2007 allowing for commissioning, final acceptance and move in during winter quarter, 2008.

01/21/04 Progress Report

The new Science Center is currently in the design stage. The project is a product of the college master planning process. It has been developed using campus building standards, county codes and regulatory requirements, sustainable design and energy standards, and finally, a focused approach toward meeting the critical programmatic needs of the college. To insure that instructional needs are incorporated into the design, a Science Center Design Team has been formed. This team will facilitate the design process, frequently engaging faculty from the Science and Health Science, Family Studies Divisions for input. The project is also a key step toward a comprehensive master plan initiative to site the next two new major buildings on the existing athletic field close to the central core of campus. The ground is relatively flat and is suitable for construction. All required utilities are easily accessible and will provide service to the new buildings. The site is located adjacent to parking and will accommodate a plan to include storm detention, landscaping, pathways and plaza provisions. A concerted effort has been made to incorporate sustainable design features and aggressive energy efficiency measures.

The design process is on schedule to break ground for construction in August, 2005, pending state funding. Construction will be complete in December, 2007 allowing for commissioning, final acceptance and move in during December for the start of winter quarter in January 2008.

07/15/03 Progress Report

The state has approved $2,396,409 in design funds for the new Science Center.  A Science Center Design Team will be formed in the next few months, consisting of faculty, staff, and the architectural team selected for the project. This team will use the June, 2002 Pre-design Study to guide the development of plans and specifications.

The design phase will be completed during the 2003-05 biennium and with construction funding approved by the state during the spring 2005 legislative session, construction will occur during the 2005-07 biennium.

03/14/03 Progress Report

The Science Center is conceived as a 68,000 square foot structure that will replace the ST and OEB buildings and add 19,161 square feet of usable space for our science and health science programs. It is estimated to cost over $29,000,000.

With design funding approval from the state during the spring 2003 legislative session, a Science Center Design Team will be formed consisting of faculty, staff, and the architectural team selected for the project. The design team will use the Pre-design Study completed in June, 2003 to guide the development of plans and specifications.

The design phase is projected to be completed during the 2003-05 biennium. With construction funding approved by the state during the spring 2005 legislative session, construction will occur during the 2005-07 biennium.

09/12/02 Progress Report

In January 2002, Science and Health Science faculty began the 6-month process of developing the concept and scope of a replacement building for the aging ST Complex and OEB. On July 1, 2002, S. M. Stemper Architects submitted the results of that effort to the state in a Science Center Pre-design Study and requested funds for the design and construction of a new complex.

The Science Center is conceived as a 68,000 square foot structure that would increase usable space from our existing 25,214 square feet to 44,375 square feet and is estimated to cost over $29,000,000.

Assuming further funding approval from the state, the design phase is slated to be completed during the 2003-05 biennium and with construction occurring during the 2005-07 biennium.

Upon completion of the Science Center, the ST Complex and OEB will be demolished.
