Green River Community College is a two-year public college in Washington state that offers degrees/certificates in academic and professional technical programs, as well as courses in continuing education and developmental education. Located on 186 acres, Green River is committed to maintaining the ecological integrity of the main campus’s forested growth. In addition to the main Auburn Campus, Green River has two branch campuses and the Auburn Adult Education Center. Kent Campus, situated in Kent Station, is located amongst a community of trendy shops, a movie theatre and many restaurants. The Enumclaw Campus is located in the historic downtown area of Enumclaw, just blocks from unique stores and eateries.  A core of about 120 full-time and 210 part-time faculty teach day and evening classes. The student population is approximately 9,000—both full-time and part-time students—and represents a growing diversity of ages and ethnic backgrounds.

POSITION PURPOSE:

The Director of Multicultural and Diversity Services reports directly to the Vice President of Student Services. This position is responsible for providing leadership and coordination of issues related to diversity. The Director works collaboratively with college administration, staff, faculty, and students to create a strong, supportive and inclusive environment for underrepresented students and is responsible for planning, implementing, and evaluating related support services and activities. This position also coordinates venues for intellectual discourse among students, staff, and faculty to promote the social benefits of diversity and multiculturalism. The Director investigates ways to increase multicultural representation and student academic progress, and enhance retention and completion rates of underrepresented students. The Director of Multicultural Diversity Services performs administrative functions such as budget management, departmental strategic planning, policy and procedure recommendations, customer service, and program assessment and evaluation.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership

  • Consult and partner with campus community in addressing issues of recruitment, enrollment, retention, and completion of underrepresented students.
  • Facilitate and partner with students, staff, and faculty on activities, forums, programs, and dialogue on campus to promote and improve understanding of diversity throughout the college community.
  • Act as liaison to the GRCC campus in terms of diversity program content, policies and procedures; responsible for the development and implementation of new procedures to maximize program effectiveness as well as exercise independent judgment in interpreting and applying rules and regulations.
  • Serve as the co-lead for the President’s Commission on Diversity and advise the Multicultural and Equity Council (MEC) in developing and/or implementing campus-wide strategic diversity initiatives.
  • Develop and foster relationships with staff and faculty to promote professional development opportunities and curriculum development in the areas of diversity.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to advisors and student clubs; implement multicultural programs and activities in collaboration with Student Life, oversee the tracking of underrepresented student participation in selected activities and programs.
  • Act as a resource for multicultural issues, e.g. participate in student leadership training, Center for Teaching and Learning workshops; manage and acquire resource materials for Diversity and Multicultural Services.
  • Conduct program-based assessment of diversity initiatives. Using the State-wide Diversity Framework and campus-wide Monitoring Report data as tools, analyze the data to assess results, compile information to assess campus diversity efforts related to underrepresented student success and recommend and implement strategies for improvement.
  • Work with institutional researcher to monitor and report the retention and graduation patterns of underrepresented students attending the college.
  • Develop recommendations and implement strategies to improve retention, academic progress and successful completion of diverse student populations.
  • Serve on appropriate committees internally and externally. May represent the college on statewide councils.

Coordination

  • Attend Student Services and departmental meetings as appropriate to assist in the coordination of programmatic or other activities that may be inter-departmental in nature
  • Attend and participate in meetings and trainings related to the College Success Foundation (CSF), the Passport to College Program, Campus Compact, and community support organizations.
  • Foster positive and collaborative communication to provide services to College Bound Scholars (CBS); work closely with CBS feeder schools in order to recruit students to GRCC.
  • Determine and evaluate student learning outcomes for CAP participants, including assessing the effectiveness of the CAP program, Passport to College program, Headwaters and other diversity initiatives. Assist with academic monitoring of underrepresented students and follow-up with students in academic difficulty.

Program

  • Update supervisor via weekly staff meetings, emails, including other written documentation as appropriate; participate in campus meetings including but not limited to department meetings, Student Services Leadership, MEC or meetings as directed by supervisor in order to hear campus concerns and offer program services.
  • Determine, coordinate, and track learning outcomes for the Commencement Achievement Peer-to-Peer Mentoring Program and Passport to College program, and the Headwaters AmeriCorps Retention Project. Effectively establish and oversee a comprehensive reporting system to monitor, analyze, and benchmark progress in diversity.
  • Maintain accurate records of office operations and budget expenses to satisfy various reporting and auditing requirements and funding proposals.
  • Administer continual program improvement efforts; including evaluative program assessment and revision.
  • Seek additional funding opportunities through grant writing and active participation in campus grant initiatives targeting diverse student populations.
  • The director will collaborate with internal and external partners to coordinate special programs to engage experts in diversity, inclusion, and cultural competency fields.
  • Compiles, reviews, and organizes data to inform and support the goals for diversity for outreach, enrollment, retention, and successful program completion.
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s Degree required in student development, sociology, cultural studies, social work, cultural diversity, multicultural education, or related field.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with diverse populations including race, ethnicity, gender, ability, age, sexual orientation, socio-economic, etc.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.
  • Knowledge of student development theory.
  • Experienced and competent with the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access and Outlook.
  • Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and presentation skills.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to work independently and/or collaboratively and manage projects from start to a successful finish.

The successful candidate will be also willing to work in and out of the office environment and be flexible in terms of time.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Demonstrated experience in data and statistics, and research methodology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse workforce and provide leadership in organizational change.
  • Outstanding commitment and established record of experience in working with underrepresented populations.
  • Three years of professional experience in an educational setting (preferably in higher education at a community college) providing direct service to students.
  • Experience advising and working with student groups.
  • Experience with successful grant-writing.
  • Familiar with current social media and has basic skill-level to utilize the media for appropriate marketing of diversity programming and communication with students.
  • Knowledge of the communities and student demographics in the local area and active community involvement.
  • Bilingual
  • Advance level of computer literacy, familiarity with SMS, Social Media, or Statistical programs.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is an exempt position with an annual salary of $52,900.Occasional work during the evenings for meetings and observations.  Occasional travel to off campus meetings. Position includes an excellent state benefits package: health and dental plans, option of participating in the State Board Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF) or in the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems’ PERS 3 Plan or there may be other options available under limited circumstances, 24 vacation days per year, 11 paid holidays per year, and 12 sick days per year).  Other fringe benefits include tuition exemption, and on-campus fitness center and the ability to participate in voluntary deferred compensation programs, Guaranteed Tuition Program and a flexible spending account (FSA) program.
