POSITION PURPOSE:

 

The Webmaster designs, manages and produces the content for Green River Community College's (GRCC) public website and sections of the college Intranet. Ensuring content is consistent with online marketing efforts, brand and design guidelines, meeting accessibility and SEO standards. This position works closely with Public Information Office (PIO), Information Technology (IT), internal and external customers to determine priorities and resource allocation, and to ensure content and design is current, fresh and enhances the image of the college. This is an exempt, professional-technical position that reports to the Executive Director Public Information.

 

The successful candidate must have a minimum of three years experience and a track record of success on multiple projects, possess excellent design skills, and be able to comfortably interact with functional and technical staff at all levels. Accurate and effective communication in English (both verbally and in writing) are essential.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Site Design, Development and Maintenance

  • Works within the PIO-Communications and Program Marketing office and collaborates with the CPM staff to develop the look and feel of marketing websites.
  • Facilitates training of content owners to ensure content is consistent and current on marketing sites.
  • Works with other departments to execute and prioritize web site content.
  • Develops content strategy aligned to college mission and customer needs
  • Determines project's overall content requirements and potential content sources.
  • Manages and ensures website content that is timely, relevant and accurate.
  • Ensures content conforms to SEO best practices.
  • Collaborates with departments to define content strategy.
  • Develops and drive web content strategy and online marketing initiatives
  • Develop social media strategy and initiatives.
    Collaborates with Public Information office to develop the news, public information, emergency messages and the GRCC Policy & Procedures manual.
  • Monitors and analyzes utilization, traffic, and transactions; regularly updates and maintain links to appropriate web resources.
  • Manages quality assurance and testing of the website content and interactivity, including browser compatibility, site usability and accessibility.
  • Works with the various web stakeholders to ensure the information presented on the web is accurate and up-to-date.
  • Works in collaboration with IT to ensure the public web site is accessible to students, employees and members of the public with disabilities.
  • Provides/coordinates user training, documentation, online tutorials, etc. in support of several third party web applications.
  • Remain open to suggestions from users and others about how to improve GRCC sites and applications:
    • Responds to internal requests, ideas for automating processes; plans, prioritizes, schedules, coordinates, and implements projects accordingly.
    • Responds to external requests for pathways to information, broken link reports and ideas on how to improve the user experience.

Strategic Planning, Long-Term Site Development and Research

  • Balances marketing, informational, and transactional demands for the public website.
  • Provides recommendations and guides the implementation of site-wide web standards, best practices and policies. Monitors the public web sites for consistency and compliance with GRCC brand standards.
  • Maintains current knowledge of “best practice” techniques in the fields of online and emerging web technologies.
  • Studies (or reverse engineers) other websites critically, especially those of other educational institutions, seeking ideas about how to improve GRCC sites and applications.

 

Administration and support of Faculty/Staff/Program Web Sites

 

  • Interact with subject matter experts, helping them edit and format content to maintain editorial and design that is consistent with GRCC brand standards.
  • Provides production, training and design support for staff, faculty and page masters.

Participates in advisory committees and other campus leadership bodies as necessary to support department goals.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Skilled at taking ambiguous suggestions and translating them into coherent design concepts.
  • Ability to develop websites using the latest coding techniques that comply with W3C and Section 508 standards, including XHTML and CSS for layout and design.
  • Experienced in creating optimized graphics for the web.
  • Effectively communicates technical web and policy topics for the purpose of having others learn, understand and apply specific principles, techniques or information.
  • Possesses a strong understanding of web design, planning and implementation.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Experienced at working under the pressure of tight deadlines.
  • Creates copy, edits, proofreads all web content and coordinate web content projects across departments.
  • Uses Google Analytics to continually analyze and interpret web site traffic and distribute a range of analytic and informational publications through various electronic means.
  • Manage website quality control including editing, proofreading, and site testing.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Web scripting/coding languages:
    • HTML, XML, CSS, jQuery, JavaScript, Actionscript, Spry Framework
  • Computer applications:
    • Content Management Systems, Ingeniux preferred
    • Adobe Creative Suite( Photoshop, Flash, Fireworks, Illustrator, Dreamweaver)
    • Microsoft products (FrontPage, Expressions Web, Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experienced using and coding for all major browsers:
    • Firefox (Mac and PC), Opera, Safari (Mac and PC), Internet Explorer and Google Chrome

MANAGEMENT, INTERPERSONAL SKILLS AND WORK HABITS:

  • Ability to build and maintain internal and external customer satisfaction with the products and services offered by the college.
  • Ability to be self-disciplined and capable of working independently on projects.

  • Possesses strong project management skills.

  • Receptive to new information on web technologies and content delivery systems found through research and similar self-directed activity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Well developed sense of design and information flow.
  • Graphic Design Certificate/or experience
  • Understanding of and experience in creating cross-browser CSS.
  • Understanding of usability and accessibility best practices.

High level of proficiency and experience using standard web creation tools (i.e. Photoshop, HTML editors, Illustrator/Freehand, web analytic tools).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work is generally sedentary in nature.

  • The working environment is generally favorable.

  • Lighting and temperature are adequate, and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc.

  • Work is generally performed within an office environment, with standard office equipment available.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is an exempt position with an annual salary range of $64,369.  Position includes an excellent state benefits package: Health and dental plans, option of participating in the State Board Retirement Plan (TIAA-CREF) or in the Washington state Department of Retirement Systems’ PERS 3 Plan, 24 vacation days per year, 11 paid holidays per year, and 12 sick days per year.  Other fringe benefits include tuition exemption, convenient daycare, and on-campus fitness center.  Occasional work occurs during the evenings and on weekends.
