Green River Community College is a two-year public college in Washington state that offers degrees/certificates in academic and professional technical programs, as well as courses in continuing education and developmental education. Located on 186 acres, Green River is committed to maintaining the ecological integrity of the main campus’s forested growth. The Enumclaw Campus is located in the historic downtown area of Enumclaw, just blocks from unique stores and eateries.  A core of about 120 full-time and 210 part-time faculty teach day and evening classes. POSITION:

The English Division is seeking a generalist in teaching composition who has experience teaching a wide range of non-transfer and transfer-level courses for students in general studies, professional/technical, and academic programs.

The student body at Green River Community College is made up of approximately 40% professional/technical and 60% academic students drawn from the surrounding and international communities, including students who are Running Start, students who are direct high school transfers, students who are returning from the workforce in need of retraining, and/or students who are speakers of English as a second language.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The position will include the following responsibilities:

  • Teaching precollege and transfer-level writing courses. These include precollege writing courses focused on basic paragraph and essay proficiency; college-level composition; and advanced research-based writing courses. Occasionally, teaching load may also include courses designed specifically for professional/technical programs.
  • Helping design precollege and transfer-level curricula.
  • Advising students, serving on committees, and other duties outlined in the negotiated faculty agreement.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in English or Composition/Rhetoric. Related degrees may be considered if applicant meets all other minimum qualifications and can demonstrate coursework in critical areas.
  • Two-year full-time equivalent experience teaching a variety of composition classes at the college level.
  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience with students from a wide variety of academic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with students and coworkers who represent a variety of ethnic, racial, socioeconomic, and gender identities and/or students with disabilities.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated successful experience participating in non-instructional professional activities, related to a community college environment (e.g., curriculum development, union participation, roundtable/workshop participation, committee work, etc.).
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with underprepared and precollege level students.
  • Demonstrated successful experience working with students who are non-native speakers of English.
  • Academic coursework or scholarly emphasis on one or more of the following: precollege reading, precollege writing, composition pedagogy, rhetorical studies.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a full-time tenure track position beginning mid-September 2012, continuing with annual nine month contracts. The salary will be determined according to the candidate's educational background, teaching experience and applicable work experience.  GRCC is an agency shop.

Selection Procedure:

A selection committee will screen all applications.  Candidates may be contacted on a conference call.  Selected candidates will be invited for personal interviews at the candidate’s own expense in accordance with State of Washington travel regulations.  Interviewees may be asked to give up to a 20-minute classroom teaching demonstration. Candidates requiring equipment must contact the Office of Human Resources no later than one week prior to the interview date.  The selection committee will recommend finalists to the Vice President.
