During
Opening Week, 2004, 13 faculty members gathered for a
two-hour workshop on how to assemble a thorough and
effective syllabus. This workshop was facilitated by Julie
Moore and new full-time and part-time faculty attended.
The first part of the workshop focused on reviewing the
elements that should be on a syllabus as covered in the
Syllabus Template (see
Assessment
Tools and Techniques). Specifically, participants
learned how to integrate Campus-wide and Course-specific
Outcomes into their syllabi.
Each faculty member who
attended the syllabus workshop created and/or revised
their syllabi for their courses to address the elements
outlined on the syllabus template. Some examples of the
syllabi created by participants are given here.

Syllabus (Loretta Ferguson)

The second part of the
syllabus workshop engaged participants in reviewing and
evaluating sample syllabi in order to see what they might
want to do on their own syllabi. Specifically,
participants discussed the format and language used in the
various syllabi, as well as evaluated how well the syllabi
incorporated the elements on the Syllabus Template. The
value of this workshop was that it introduced new faculty
to outcomes as well as standards for strong syllabi. This
will help encourage these new instructors to address
Campus-wide Outcomes in their courses.
