Capital Planning
Long Range Plan
2007-2009 Biennium, Projects
Planned for Pre-Design and Design Phases
Three of the four buildings that
comprise the Trades complex (TIA, TIB, and TIC) were
built in the late sixties, and have exceeded their life
cycles. They are no longer able to support the
instructional needs of the institution. The condition of
the facility is inadequate for instruction. A
replacement is needed.
Through the Facilities Master Plan
process, stakeholders have developed a long-term vision
for the main campus. Given the need for balance between
providing infrastructure and parking for new projects and
maintaining the natural environment, including wetlands
and steep slopes, the main campus can only accommodate
limited growth. At the same time, the communities served
by the college are growing. Between 2000 and 2010, the
population in Auburn and Kent is projected to increase by
8.5%. Kent is now the largest community in South King
County, with 84,000 residents. In addition, the main
campus is not easily accessible to many potential
students in the northern portion of the GRCC service
area.
By offering core classes at a
satellite campus, the college is providing easily
accessible programs and services to a greater number of
students in its delivery area. Construction of Phase I
began in fall, 2004 and was completed in late summer,
2005.
Kent Campus Phase II will allow the
college to expand its offerings beyond the main campus by
offering general studies programs there as well. The
facility will match the quality of recently completed
projects on campus, with an emphasis on sustainable
features and will be built to meet current and future
instructional needs.
The plan calls for a 40,000 square
foot addition to complement its Phase I presence at Kent
Station.
The project is planned for
pre-design during the 2007-2009 biennium, followed by
design in the 2009-2011 biennium, and construction in the
2011-13 biennium.
2009-2011, 2011-2013, and
2013-2015 Biennia, Projects Planned for Pre-Design,
Design, and Construction Phases
With funding approval from the
state, design and permitting for the replacement of the
trades complex will occur in 2009-2011, followed by
construction in 2011-2013.
With funding from the state, design
for Kent Campus Phase II will occur in 2009-2011,
followed by construction in 2011-2013.
The three story SMT building was
constructed with a concrete structural frame with marble-crete
panels over concrete masonry units. This heavier
construction type coupled with a larger building size
makes this an ideal candidate for renovation. With
funding from the state, design for the SMT renovation
will occur in 2009-2011, followed by construction in
2011-2013.
The student programs, student
services, and administration buildings are ideal
candidates for replacement. With funding approval from
the state, pre-design for these replacements will occur
during the 2009-2011 biennium, followed by design in
2011-2013, and construction during the 2013-2015.
Demolition of the student center and
administration buildings are planned during the 2015-2017
biennium.
