GRCC Diversity Program Goal

Opportunities should be sought to create framework that supports physical expressions of GRCC college community diversity

Purpose

GRCC, particularly with its emphasis on international student programs, is remarkably diverse. This diversity is highly valued. Recent efforts to increase student population from countries other than the United States have highlighted the need and desire to celebrate the diversity of cultures on campus.

President's Commission on Diversity

In fall, 2005, the college president formed the President’s Commission on Diversity. Using the Washington Center for Improving the Quality of Undergraduate Education’s Framework for Diversity Assessment and Planning document, the commission is undertaking a comprehensive examination of diversity across all elements of campus life. Section 8 of the document outlines a Physical Environment Audit that will be useful in creating a framework for the Facilities Master Plan.

Framework

Development on campus shall seek to establish a framework within which diversity can be expressed. This framework should not seek to impose specific cultural values or images but should offer a backdrop for cultural diversity to find expression by the GRCC community.

Examples of framework may include:

  • Providing plaza areas for use by groups for expression such as dance, music, food, theater, etc

  • Designating certain public walkways as “cultural paths” and providing space within the walkway for groups to install culturally specific paving patterns.

  • Establishing an area for a sculpture garden where groups may install sculptures reflecting their communities.

  • Providing space for art which celebrates diversity.

The intent of these examples is to provide a framework that can accommodate continual expansion and evolution of expressions of diversity. These expressions are works in progress that will be developed by many communities over the life of the college.
