Development Program
Campus Sign Program
GRCC Sign Program Goal
Provide a fully integrated sign
program that includes a full range of sign elements in a
consistent and clearly organized plan. Sign shall seek
to celebrate the mission and core values of GRCC; foster
easy navigation of campus by the current college
community, visitors, and those with disabilities; and be
informative of campus attributes and opportunities.
Purpose
Effective sign is an important
element of successful campus navigation. The primary
goal of a comprehensive campus sign plan is to make the
campus more welcoming and accessible without detracting
from its natural setting. An effective sign program
provides information clearly and only where necessary,
minimizes the number of signs, and enhances the
appearance of campus.
Well-planned sign will provide clear directions to
campus destinations for both vehicles and pedestrians.
The program will be comprised of a system of signs that
include college and building identification, pedestrian
paths, and informational signs.
Key to a successful sign program is the establishment of
a hierarchy of destinations and concise trip patterns
for visitors.
Sign Types
-
Landmark/Icon
This component is typically a
large dimensional element which physically seeks to
represent the mission and values of the institution.
It may convey the “architectural image” of the
campus environment and will likely not be a “sign,”
but rather a clock, bell tower, sculpture, building
façade, etc. The most recognizable icon on campus is
the water wall and stone sphere sculpture on
Kennelly Commons.
Locations: May be at the main arrival point of
campus or at the psychological heart.
- Campus Entry Signs
The purpose of entry sign is to indicate arrival at
the campus. It should include the primary college
logo and will be integrated with a gateway, paving
change, or other indication of threshold.
Directional information should be significantly
limited. The current signs at the campus entry do
not meet these criteria.
Locations: Generally located at the first arrival
points at campus by car, bus, or on foot.
-
Campus Directories
A campus directory is a map
with a legend, designed to provide orientation and
information to first-time visitors to the college.
Directories should be easily adaptable to change.
Locations: Provided at the gateway points of campus,
i.e. the point at which the pedestrian pathway
network transitions from vehicles. Directories
should also be located at main campus gathering
locations, i.e. plazas, greens, etc.
- Directional
Directional signs provide directions to desired
buildings. These signs should be minimized, as they
tend to visually clutter the campus.
Locations:Placed at the intersections of all main
campus roads and pedestrian pathways.
- Informational
This sign indicates a variety of information, i.e.
parking, traffic, smoking, transit, bike rack, etc.
Locations: Where activity dictates
- Building Identification
These signs indicate a building’s name and may
include programs or services within. It may also
include building numbers, letters, or address.
Existing building signs may need to be relocated as
future development occurs.
Locations: Typically located immediately adjacent to
main entrance.
- Dedicatory
These signs indicate a campus milestone, gift, or
event
Locations: As appropriate
