Associate in Applied Arts Degree

The Accounting program at Green River prepares you for immediate employment while providing the accounting background that may assist with future advancement.
The program offers the Associate in Applied Arts degree as well as two certificates.

When can new students enroll?
Students may enroll at the beginning of any quarter. However, the recommended entry time is fall quarter. Sequential courses are not guaranteed if students begin the program other than at the beginning of the academic year.

Prerequisites
Complete an application to Green River Community College, complete the COMPASS assessment, and meet with an advisor.
Students must demonstrate at least a 10th grade reading level and basic math skills to be successful in the program.

How long does the program take?
It depends on you. If you attend Green River full time, the Accounting Associate in Applied Arts degree requirements can be completed in six quarters. The Accounting certificate program can be completed in three quarters. The Accounting Clerk certificate requirements can be completed in one quarter. If you attend part time, completion will depend on how many credits per quarter you complete.

Special fees
Courses requiring special equipment have modest fees. You may want to purchase a calculator.

What will contribute to success in the program?
A student needs numerical aptitude and the ability to concentrate, conceptualize, organize and remember details, and the ability to work on a team.

Special program notes
Green River’s Accounting program offers you training in:

  • Computer applications in accounting.

  • Theory of debits and credits, and the double-entry accounting system.

  • Following a complete accounting cycle for service and merchandising businesses.

  • Understanding and preparing financial statements.

  • Special applications such as various methods for valuing inventory, acceptable methods of depreciation, payroll, tax reporting, etc.

Does the program transfer to four-year schools?
In general, the classes for the Accounting program will not transfer. All transferability of courses to four-year institutions is at the discretion of the accepting institution. Students should contact an advisor at the college to which they intend to transfer.

Employment outlook
Accounting is a large and well-established occupation with a strong employment outlook. However, computers have taken over many procedural tasks formerly performed by accountants, which makes it mandatory for job applicants to have demonstrated competencies in technical, communication and computer skills.
