Art Certificate
Your education in the arts begins here. Green River Community College
fosters an in-depth preparation for the study and creation of art. At
Green River you will undertake a program of study which helps each
individual student find a balance between aesthetics and technique in your
creative process and expression. Through the development of strong problem
solving skills, you will learn to discuss the theoretical and practical
meaning of your work. At Green River you can develop your ideas, build
strong techniques, and create a competitive portfolio.
We offer certificates in four disciplines–design, studio, photography, and
ceramics. Each of these programs starts you off with an, emphasis on the
fundamentals of art and design and then advances you to a specialty. Each
certificate requires ART 105 (Beginning Drawing), ART 109 (Beginning
Design), and ART 180 (The Artist’s Portfolio). If you are ready to take
your artistic creation to the next level, register for classes now.
When can new students enroll?
You may enroll in an Art Certificate program at the beginning of any
quarter. Please note that some courses are only offered once or twice a
year.
Prerequisites
Complete an application to Green River, complete the COMPASS assessment,
and meet with an art advisor. A GED or high school diploma is highly
recommended. Communication (written and verbal) and organizational skills
are important.
How long does the program take?
It depends on your schedule. These certificates are designed to be
completed within 43 credits. To further your knowledge of the arts and
your skill level,
additional coursework in art history and various other art classes
depending on the certificate, are recommended. However, they are not
required to complete the certificate.
Special fees
Many of the art courses require additional fees, ranging from $10-$50. You
will also be required to purchase your own art supplies.
Financial aid
This certificate does not qualify for federal/state financial aid or VA
funding unless the certificate or courses are applied toward an
appropriate two-year degree program.
What is a portfolio?
A portfolio of artwork is a collection of your best and most recent
work—approximately 15-20 pieces. It is a crucial part of your application
to professional art schools, most university art programs, and galleries.
The portfolio helps someone evaluate your achievements and potential.
The following are some considerations for portfolio inclusion:
Drawings
Drawings from observation only
Figure drawing from a live model
Composition skills
Exploration of media, including use of color
Design—2D, 3D
Abstract work
Complex compositional skills
Thoughtful execution of ideas
Good craftsmanship
Note: The portfolio should also include
examples of your best work in your specialty.
Does the program transfer to four-year schools?
All transferability of classes to four-year institutions is at the
discretion of the receiving institution. Students should contact an
advisor at the college to which they intend to transfer.
