High School Completion

High School Completion & GED Preparation

If you have not completed high school and have always wanted to do something about it…

Green River has two options you need to know about:

  • high school diploma

  • GED preparation program

How do these programs differ?
The high school completion program allows you to take specific classes that substitute for those not completed in high school. After successful completion of the required credits, Green River will award you a Washington State High School Diploma.

GED testing focuses on your general knowledge base, not just specific knowledge acquired in school.

The GED test measures your acquired knowledge and thinking skills in five different areas: writing; social studies; science; reading; and mathematics. Your achievement will be measured against that of graduating high school seniors. Passing the test demonstrates that you have skills and knowledge comparable to traditional high school graduates.

Which is better for me?
An advisor can help you decide which program is best for you, based on the number of high school credits you have already earned, your life experiences, and your educational and occupational goals.

What can I expect from these programs?

  • To work and learn in a supportive, positive environment.

  • To actively participate in designing a work plan or course of study.

  • To fill in the “gaps” in your previous education.

  • To gain confidence in your own abilities.

  • To open new opportunities for better jobs and further schooling.

What is expected of me?

  • Attend class regularly.

  • Take an active role in your learning.

How much does each option cost?
GED:

  • $25 tuition per quarter.

  • $75 testing fee.

High School Completion:

  • For students 19 years old or older, reduced tuition is available.

  • Students 18 or younger pay regular college tuition.

GED Preparation Program
This program offers classes to help you get ready for the GED test. Brushing up on rusty skills, taking practice tests, acquiring new knowledge and gaining confidence are some of the benefits of the GED Preparation Program. Each student has an individualized educational plan and addresses his or her own educational needs.

This program offers students a chance to do their best on the GED test. In addition to improving skills, students will learn to “test smart!” by using practice tests and learning test-taking strategies.

GED preparation classes include:

  • Self-paced classes, in which you work on specific topics.

  • Content-specific classes, such as math and writing, where you can learn while working with other students.

When and where are GED classes held?
Classes are offered morning, afternoon, and evening at the following locations: The main campus, Enumclaw Campus, and the Auburn Adult Education Center.

High School Completion
The High School Completion program at Green River provides a quality program of study that meets the requirements for a Washington state diploma. The program strives for excellence by helping a diverse population of students develop academic, vocational, and interpersonal skills.

This program can help you:

  • Earn your high school diploma by completing credit classes.

  • Prepare for entry into a professional/technical program.

  • Provide preparation for entry into college credit courses.

One advantage of Green River’s High School Completion program is the wide variety of courses available, including our professional/technical and other career preparation courses.

There are three ways you can earn your diploma, depending on circumstances:

  • Transfer Green River credits back to your high school, for a diploma to be awarded by them.

  • Withdraw from high school and work toward a diploma awarded by Green River.

  • If you are 19 or over, and out of high school, earn a diploma from Green River.

Process and requirements differ slightly for the three options. Consult your high school counselor, a Green River education planner, ext. 2641, or go to www.greenriver.edu, click on Programs & Courses, then High School Programs.
