Medical Transcriptionist
Certificate

A Medical Transcriptionist certificate can be completed in one year. As a medical transcriptionist (medical language specialist), you can establish a home-based business or work outside your home.

Graduates work as medical administrative assistants, receptionists, and billing coders in a variety of office settings.

Medical Transcriptionist graduates can seek employment in the following areas:

  • Medical clinics

  • Doctors' offices

  • Hospitals (public, private, teaching, psychiatric)

  • Medical libraries

  • Radiology departments

  • Pathology laboratories

  • Insurance companies

  • Publishing companies

  • Government medical facilities

  • Medical transcription services

When can new students enroll?
You may enroll in the Medical Transcriptionist program at the beginning of any quarter. The program hours are flexible with day, evening, and some online classes.

Prerequisites
Complete an application to Green River Community College, complete the COMPASS assessment, spelling test, and meet with a Business Education advisor.

A GED or a high school diploma is highly recommended before entering the program. Communication (written and verbal) and organizational skills are vital.

How long does the program take?
It depends on you. If you successfully complete a full schedule each quarter, the certificate requirements may be completed in 4–5 quarters.

Special fees
Courses requiring special equipment have additional fees.

Personal requirements for success
Medical transcriptionists (medical language specialists) need to be task-oriented, flexible, detail-oriented, have excellent listening, grammar, and research skills and be able to adapt to changing situations.

Does the program transfer to four-year schools?
Classes in this program are primarily professional/technical. All transferability of classes to four-year institutions is at the discretion of the receiving institution. However, credits can be applied toward Green River's Medical Office Education degree, enabling students to complete both programs.

The current starting salary range for a medical transcriptionist graduate may be found at http://jobtrainingresults.org. Rate of pay may be based on an hourly rate, words per line, lines per page and/or by document type. (AAMT)
