Welcome to the second edition of The Report Card newsletter! The newsletter is published monthly and contain information on various topics related to institutional effectiveness. This second issue is on Transfer

Background:

A large number of students enroll at Green River with the goal to transfer to four-year universities and colleges. In fall 2001, 41% of the students enrolled at GRCC  indicated that their intent was to transfer, compared with 34% of students enrolled in community colleges system-wide. Of the GRCC transfer-bound students, 84% studied full-time and approximately 54% were female students. Of the new students nearly 38%  planned to complete a degree at GRCC before transferring.

Highlights:

In fall 2001, 376 students transferred to a Washington state four-year institution. The largest number of students transferred to University of Washington (34%) and Central Washington University (23%). Of all the students transferring, 35% transferred as freshmen or sophomores and 65% transferred as juniors or seniors. (See Figure 1). For transfer students system-wide, the largest number of students transferred to University of Washington (27%) and private independent universities and colleges (17%). (See Figure 2).

Early this year the Office of Institutional Studies (OIS) at the University of Washington completed a research study on transfer students from key feeder community colleges. The study looked at the average time to complete a four-year degree, average number of quarters enrolled, and the average GPA earned at graduation by transfer students.  The study resulted from a collaborative datasharing effort that began in 1999 between the SBCTC and University of Washington to answer transfer articulation questions.  A database, Mutual Research Transcript Enterprise (MRTE), was developed to give community colleges restricted access to transcript data on their transfer students at University of Washington. Other four-year state universities are expected to join MRTE within the next year or two.  For more information on MRTE click here. Highlights from the OIS study are listed below:

  • Fifty-six percent of GRCC students transferring to the UW in fall of 1995 graduated within three years compared with 50% of transfer students system-wide, and 79% of UW native students. Fifty-four percent of GRCC students transferring in the fall of 1996 graduated within three years compared with 54% of system-wide transfer students, and 76% of UW native students. (See Figure 3).
  • GRCC transfer students were enrolled an average of 7.75 quarters at UW compared with 7.77 quarters for transfer students system-wide, and 6.86 quarters for UW native students before graduating. (See Figure 4).
  • GRCC transfer students graduated from UW with an average GPA of 3.17 compared with 3.24 for transfer students system-wide, and 3.25 for UW native students. (See Figure 5).
