Welcome to another issue of The Report Card, a monthly newsletter containing information on various topics related to institutional effectiveness. This issue is on Student Satisfaction.

Background:

The EVP Office conducted the first entering student survey in 1986. Since 1990, it  has been conducted biennially.  Last fall, the questionnaire was updated to reflect changes made over the years to programs and services provided to new students.  The name of the survey was also changed from Entering Student Survey to the New Student Survey. The questionnaire solicits information about students' impressions of entry services such as admission, registration, testing, and advising.  It also solicits information about students’ educational needs and preferences while attending Green River.  The results are used to review, improve and develop programs and services for Green River students.

In fall 2002, nearly 3,000 questionnaires were sent out to all new students. A total of 545 questionnaires were returned (almost a 20% response rate).  Of the respondents, two-thirds were female and nearly 20% were students of color.  Approximately 44% were 20 years old or younger. Sixty-six percent are first generation college students (neither parent attained a bachelor’s degree).

Highlights:

  • Green River was the first college of choice for 86% of the respondents.

  • Nearly half (47%) indicated that they enrolled for the purpose of taking courses to transfer or to obtain a transfer degree.  Over 34% enrolled for the purpose of taking job-related courses to update skills or to obtain a professional/technical degree and/or certificate.
    (See Figure 1).

  • Fifty-seven percent indicated that the college catalog, quarterly class schedules and brochures were major sources of information about Green River.  In addition, nearly 45% indicated that the college Web site was a major source of information.  (See Figure 2).

  • The four most important factors to students in their decision to attend Green River were courses or programs offered (64%), proximity (53%), ability to work while attending (46%), and cost of attending (39%). (See Figure 3). These top factors have remained unchanged since 1990.

  • The majority of the respondents indicated that they had not heard of the campus-wide learning outcomes. (See Figure 4). This was expected since these students were new to Green River. These numbers will serve as a baseline and will be compared to the results of the Returning Student Survey next year.

  • About 61% of the respondents perceived their public speaking skills to be less than good.  Fifty-six percent perceived their skills or abilities in math concepts and statistical reasoning to be less than good.  (See Figure 5). Nearly half (49%) indicated that they need additional support to improve test-taking skills and 47% to improve mathematical skills. (See Figure 6).

  • At least two-thirds of the respondents were either very satisfied or satisfied with the following entry services and programs: application/admission process (76%), online resources (75%) and registration (66%). (See Figure 7).

  • More than 71% indicated that their overall impression of the quality of instruction at Green River was excellent or above average.  About 88% indicated that they were overall very satisfied or satisfied with Green River. (See Figure 8).

  • Approximately 42% indicated that they would consider carpooling and 20% would consider parking off-campus and taking a shuttle. About 46% of the respondents indicated that they would probably or definitely support an additional fee to build a parking garage on campus. (See Figure 9).
