Vonny Salim may be small in size, but she is big in talent.  Originally from Bandung, Indonesia, Vonny came to Green River in the fall 2003 to study science and education.  “I love everything about science and one day I would like to teach science in a secondary school,” said Vonny. On June 16th, she will be graduating from Green River with a 3.97 GPA and transferring to Johns Hopkins University, a leading university in biomedical research. Vonny plans to major in microbiology with a minor in education.  Vonny  was also accepted to UCLA and UC Berkeley.

Jesse Johnson
Jesse Johnson

Jesse Johnson, an 18 year old Running Start student at Green River, was awarded a $52,000 scholarship to Centre College located in Danville, Kentucky.  Sounds like an easy college transfer choice? Not really.  Jesse, who will be graduating in June 2005, also received a scholarship from Pacific Lutheran University and was accepted to the University of Washington and Western Washington University.

Jesse, who likes to solve calculus problems when he is bored, has always been inspired by teachers and teaching. Currently, Jesse is one of The Writing Center's stellar tutors.  "Teaching gives me  joy," he said modestly. He also enjoys volunteering in the Math Learning Lab and when he is away from the books, he is a ski instructor. His academic goal is to get his masters and Ph.D. in English and math and eventually teach in a college or university.

A monthly newsletter that gives you the facts...          June 14, 2005  -  Vol. III, Issue viii

Welcome to The Report Card, a monthly newsletter containing information on various topics related to institutional effectiveness.  This issue is on Transfer.

Background:

A large number of community college students enroll with the goal to transfer to four-year universities and colleges.  In Washington state, transfers from community colleges earn more than one-third of all bachelor’s degrees.

In fall 2004, 45% of the students enrolled at Green River indicated that their intent was to transfer, compared with 36% of students enrolled in community colleges system-wide. Fifty-three percent of the transfer-bound students planned to complete a degree at Green River before transferring.

Highlights:

Over 650 Green River students transferred to public and private baccalaureate institutions in Washington state last year. Approximately 65% of these students transferred to the six public institutions within the state, including their various branch and satellite campuses.

  • The largest number of Green River students transferred to the University of Washington (24%) and Central Washington University (18%). Note: This includes CWU’s centers and UW’s branch campuses. (See Figure 1).

  • Private baccalaureate institutions have become popular choices for many Green River students. Last year, 111 students or 17% of the total transferred to the University of Phoenix while 47 students or 7% of the total transferred to City University.

  • Seventy-five percent of Green River students transferring to the public four-year institutions transferred as juniors or seniors and 25% transferred as freshmen or sophomores. (See Figure 2).

Green River participates in a collaborative data sharing effort that began in 1999 between the SBCTC and University of Washington to answer transfer articulation questions. The database, Mutual Research Transcript Enterprise (MRTE), was developed to give community colleges restricted access to transcript data on their transfer students at University of Washington (UW). Other four-year state universities, including Central Washington University, Western Washington University, and Eastern Washington University are in the process of joining MRTE.

  • Two-thirds (66%) of Green River students transferring to the UW in fall 2000 graduated within three years compared with 61% of transfer students system-wide and 80% of UW native students. (See Figure 3).

  • Both Green River transfer students and transfer students system-wide graduated from UW with an average GPA of 3.24 compared with 3.25 for UW native students. (See Figure 4).
