What is TRIO?
TRIO is a group of federally funded programs. To date there are seven
separate federal programs under TRIO: Upward Bound (1964), Talent Search
(1965), Student Support Services (1968), Upward Bound Math/Science (1990),
Veterans Upward Bound, Educational Opportunity Centers (1972) and Ronald E.
McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement (1986). The TRIO program at Green
River Community College is specifically funded under the Student Support
Services grant. (return to top)
What does TRIO do?
Green River’s TRIO program exists to help students in two-year degree
programs remain in college and graduate, as well as to assist students in
transferring to a 4-year institution. (return to top)
What
services does TRIO offer?
TRIO offers a number of services created to increase student’s leadership
and study skills, as well as to strengthen their college survival skills,
all essential in order to be a successful student. These services include:
priority registration, cultural enrichment activities, educational
workshops, visits to nearby 4-year institutions, financial aid and
scholarship resources, tutoring, personalized academic and career advising,
and transfer assistance. (return to top)
What
kinds of educational workshops does TRIO provide?
Because so many of our students are interested in transferring to a 4-year
college, we provide annual transfer workshops. Workshop staff usually cover
topics such as how to best
fill out the transfer application, deadlines, transfer days, and personal
essays. Other popular workshops
include Study Skills, Tips for Success in Math, Time
Management, Stress Management, and Career and Scholarship Research. We
encourage students to suggest other topics and provide feedback on all TRIO
activities.

What are the requirements to join TRIO?
You must either be First-Generation (neither parent has obtained a Bachelor’s
Degree), Low-Income (according to federal guidelines) and/or have a
documented disability. In addition, a student must meet
all of the following criteria: be a U.S. citizen or Legal Resident (must
qualify for federal aid), have a FAFSA on file, have academic need and
taking at least 9 credits per quarter at GRCC with the intent of working
towards a degree or transferring to a 4-year college. We are funded to work
with approximately 200 students each year so there is an application process
to screen for qualified participants. (return to

How do I
apply?
Students can pick up an application at the TRIO Student Support Services
office, located on the 2nd floor of the Lindbloom Student
Center. We are located behind Enrollment Services' main windows. The TRIO
program generally accepts new students/applications during fall quarter of
each year. (return to top)
What does the application process include?
After completing the TRIO application and submitting financial documentation
(copies of yours or your parents’ most recent tax returns), students are
scheduled for a personal intake interview with one of the TRIO advisors.
How
will I know if I am accepted into TRIO?
After the intake interview, pending verification of eligibility requirements
and vacancies within the eligibility categories, students are informed
of their status by mail or telephone. The student then signs up for
a TRIO orientation meeting. After the student attends the orientation and
signs the appropriate forms, the student can then be admitted into the
program. (return to top)
What
if I am not accepted into the program?
If you are notified that you have not been accepted, the best thing to do is
to either call or come by the office to find out specifically why you were
denied. It is possible that you need to submit additional information in order to
have this status changed. If you do not meet the eligibility criteria for
our program, we can refer you to other resources on campus for academic
assistance. (return to top)
Who can
I contact if I have further questions?
Stop by our office in Lindbloom Student Center (2nd Floor) or
give us a call at (253) 833-9111, ext. 2655. Three full-time staff are
available to assist you.
We look forward to working
with you. Best wishes for a successful academic year!
