Green River celebrates veterans with commemorations held throughout week
Green River will host four events this week in commemoration of Veterans Day, the national holiday that commemorates and honors the country's veterans. Veterans Day is Nov. 11 with the day observed Nov. 12 with the closure of non-essential public agencies and schools as well as many private organizations.
Join the Green River community at these events to celebrate the service of veterans:
- Showcase of Military and Veteran Memorabilia, Nov. 5-9, in the Lindbloom Student Center (LC).
- SOS Veterans Breakfast, Nov 9, in the LC, Glacier Room
- The Invisible War, Nov. 8 in the LC, Baker Room
- Join Green River Community College in the Auburn Veterans Day Parade, Nov. 10.
Veterans Day is observed on Nov. 11 because it was on Nov. 11, 1919, that the guns fell silent along what was known then as the Western Front. The Allies and Germany observed the agreement to end this "War to End All Wars" and it is now known as the 11 hour, on the 11 day of the 11 month. The day was not memorialized as the holiday we know it as today until Congress passed Act 52 Stat. 351; 5 U. S. Code, Sec. 87a on May 13, 1938.
It was during that same year that President Dwight D. Eisenhower passed the first Veteran's day Proclamation, a tradition continued by each subsequent Commander and Chief up to the present day.
