We will be working with two coaches from Achieving the Dream, a leadership coach and a data coach.
Brenda Beckman, M.A.
Brenda Beckman, Achieving the Dream Leadership Coach, works with ten colleges in Washington, Michigan, and North Carolina. She has led many initiatives and conferences as former Vice President and current Leadership Consultant for the League for Innovation in the Community College. Beckman has also coordinated the League-sponsored and internationally-recognized Executive Leadership Institute for 25 years.
Beckman has worked in higher education for 40 years. She was a faculty member then senior administrator at Delta College in Michigan from 1974-85. She then moved to Arizona from 1985-1990, where she served as East Campus CEO then District President. From 2001-02, Beckman served as Interim President of Aims Community College in Colorado.
Beckman has extensive experience in curriculum, workforce, organizational and leadership development, and accreditation. She also has experience working with multiple institutions, state, regional and national organizations including the American Association of Community Colleges, the Association of Community College Trustees, and the North Central Association/Higher Learning Commission.
Beckman has won many awards and holds an associate degree from Macomb Community College, a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Oakland University and a master's degree in Political Science from Central Michigan University. She performed doctoral work in Political Science at Michigan State University and held a Fellowship in Higher Education Administration at The University of Michigan.
Trudy Bers, Ph.D.
Trudy Bers is President of The Bers Group, an educational consulting organization. She was formerly the Executive Director of Research, Curriculum and Planning at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines, Illinois. She is a Data Coach for eight Achieving the Dream colleges; a consultant-evaluator for the Higher Learning Commission regional accrediting association; a faculty in the University of Maryland University College doctor of management in community college leadership program; and program evaluator for a Kresge Foundation grant at Governors State University in Illinois.
Her research interests include the community college, the assessment of student learning outcomes, and the effective presentation and use of data. She has been president of the Association for Institutional Research (AIR), the Council for the Study of Community Colleges, the National Community College Council for Research and Planning and the Illinois Association for Institutional Research, and is former chair of the National Postsecondary Education Cooperative Executive Committee. She has published more than more than fifty articles in professional journals, edited or co-edited four issues of New Directions for Community Colleges, co-authored two AIR online professional development courses, and made more than fifty presentations at professional conferences.
Bers earned her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Illinois-Urbana, and holds an M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University, an A.M. in Public Law and Government from Columbia University, and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Illinois-Urbana.
