Sherman Alexie, the first in a three-event lineup, will visit campus January 31.

Green River invites you to take part in the inspiration, humor and culture of the 2012-2013 Artist and Speakers series brought to you by the Student Life office. We welcome the return engagement of this born survivor, prolific writer, comedic entertainer and author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, Green River’s One Book Choice for 2012-2013. Alexie was awarded the PEN Faulkner Award in 2009 for his book War Dances. His book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven was released as the award winning film Smoke Signals at the Sundance Film Festival in 1998.

Join us for an inspirational story of hope and courage. J.R. Martinez is among People Magazines most intriguing people of the year. An Iraq War veteran, actor and 2011 Dancing with the Stars winner, Martinez was rated as People Magazines sexiest man alive in 2011. In 2003 he suffered burns to over 40% of his body, when trapped in a Humvee in Iraq. J.R. claims that the experience was certainly life-changing, but amazingly for the better.

Our 9th Annual Sounds of Hawai`i features Kaumakaiwa Kanaka’ole, a five-time Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner for hula and choreography. Joining him are other popular artists of island music and comedy including the South Sounds award winning hula dance team halau Ke`ala `O Kamailelauli`ili`I under the instruction of Kumu Hula Kamaile Hamada.
