Green River selected by DHS for national Campus Resilience Pilot Program
Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced today the selection of Green River College to participate in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Campus Resilience Pilot Program (CR Pilot). Green River will join six other colleges and universities nationwide to help develop and pilot an emergency preparedness and resilience planning program, facilitated by community engagement, local stakeholders, campus leadership and students.
Green River is the only college representing Washington state and the Northwest and the only community college chosen nationally.
"Green River College will serve as a valuable partner in our efforts to help colleges and universities prepare for, respond to, and recover from crisis and emergency situations," said Secretary Napolitano. "Through its work with DHS, Green River College will help us further develop best practices, resources and tools needed to assist campus communities nationwide in their resilience and emergency planning processes."
The CR Pilot will emphasize the importance of DHS' Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) ‘Whole Community' approach to planning and resilience efforts, and will highlight the needs of various student populations. The program will bring together school officials, students, and members of the local community to discuss new, innovative approaches to campus resilience and emergency planning, and will build upon Green River College's existing efforts in this area.
"Green River's leadership team is excited by the opportunity to use the Whole Community philosophy to move beyond easy, typical approaches, and to look at real community needs and issues," said Green River College President Dr. Eileen Ely.
Green River College has a fast-acting and well-coordinated incident response system, detailed in an Emergency Response Plan and implemented via an Emergency Operations Center which can be activated at any moment. Additionally, Green River has developed emergency response systems in partnership with nearby civic and community-based institutions and takes an all-hazard approach to training for all emergencies.
The CR Pilot is a joint initiative of and is supported by DHS' FEMA, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Student and Exchange Visitor Program, and the Office of Academic Engagement.
