Green River to host congressional art competition

About 80 pieces of artwork created by area high school students will be on display May 3 to 8 at Green River Community College's Bleha Center for the Performing Arts as part of Congressman Dave Reichert's annual Congressional Art Competition. The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide event designed to recognize and encourage artistic talent.

"It is an honor for Green River to host Congressman Reichert's art competition," said Green River president Dr. Eileen Ely. "We have a proud tradition of incorporating the arts into the quality education our students receive, and this competition demonstrates that ongoing commitment."

Visitors are welcome to the Green River campus to view the students' artwork. The Performing Arts building will be open during the following hours:

  • Friday, May 3, noon to 2 p.m.
  • Saturday, May 4, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • Sunday, May 5, noon to 2 p.m.
  • Monday, May 6, 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Tuesday, May 7, 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday, May 8 4 to 6 p.m.

Artwork will be evaluated by a panel of three judges, and the winning piece will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol building for the next year. This is the first time Green River has hosted the Congressional Art Competition. Congressman Reichert, a member of the Congressional Arts Caucus, has participated in the Congressional Art Competition every year since taking office in 2005.
