Journalist Lisa Ling will speak on-campus Dec. 5.

Green River Community College will welcome journalist and writer Lisa Ling Dec. 5 as the first presenter in the 2013-14 Artist and Speakers Series. Speaking on the UN-recognized International Volunteer Day for Economic and Social Development, Ling's presentation will center on her work for National Geographic.

The event begins at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 at the Lindbloom Student Center on Green River's main campus in Auburn. Tickets are $15 or free for Green River students by calling (253) 833-9111, extension 2400.

Ling was born on August 30, 1973 in Sacramento, California. Raised by her father after her parents' divorce, Ling became a successful journalist. She has worked as co-host on the popular talk show The View, National Geographic Explorer, a special correspondent for The Oprah Winfrey Show and the host of her own show Our America with Lisa Ling.

The Green River Artist & Speakers Series has worked to engage the college and community for over 30 years. The college will host Japanese-American author Julie Otsuka and Sounds of Hawai'i featuring The Makaha Sons. Past speakers have included Dr. Maya Angelou, Jane Goodall, Carl Sagan, Sherman Alexie and Dr. Cornel West.
