Boeing investment to strengthen college access efforts in South King County

Boeing has invested in King County's effort to improve college access.

Boeing's rich history of supporting and engaging in important local educational initiatives is continuing in a significant way this fall through a community investment in the efforts of the South King County College Access Network (SKCCAN). The aerospace company's charitable grant will double SKCCAN's operating budget for the coming years.

"This generous grant will give SKCCAN the tools it needs to better serve our community's students, especially those who are first-generation, low-income or students of color," said Green River President Dr. Eileen Ely.

Boeing's charitable grant will substantially increase SKCCAN's ability to support capacity building amongst network members, expand and support services and resources that ultimately create opportunities for students to pursue postsecondary educational opportunities. This is an exciting time as SKCCAN and Boeing are also exploring creative ways that Boeing employees can give of their time and talents to aid organizations like the SKCCAN to support the local communities in which they live and work.

"This project aligns to Boeing's strategy to improve and align systems that advance students' skills and ensure their future success. Through SKCCAN program offerings, students will have better access to, and success in, a greater array of college and career options," said Sam Whiting, Boeing Community Investor.

The SKCCAN is committed to increasing postsecondary access and completion for first-generation and low-income students. SKCCAN facilitates a network comprised of community and education leaders representing K-12, postsecondary education, government organizations, and the business and nonprofit sector who collectively influence efforts that support college awareness, readiness, access and success for all students in South King County.

"Boeing's commitment to the youth in South King County is evident by their contributions and engagement with our educational needs and initiatives. Boeing's generous support of the South King County College Access Network will have a major influence on the postsecondary awareness, readiness, and access efforts supporting youth in this region," said Christopher Wells, South King County College Access Network Executive Director.

The SKCCAN works in alignment with the Road Map Project, a region-wide effort aimed at improving education to drive dramatic improvement in student achievement. Supporting the project's goal to double the number of students in the region who are on track to graduate from college or earn a career credential by 2020 and close achievement gaps.
