What is a prerequisite?
A prerequisite is a course that must be completed (often with a certain minimum grade) or a skill that must be demonstrated before you can enroll in a course. For example, ENGL& 101 (English Composition 1), with a grade of 2.0 or higher, is a prerequisite for ENGL 126 (Writing: Humanities).
What are the types of prerequisites?
There are three types of prerequisites:
- Recommended prerequisite- A prerequisite that will not block you from registration: you can register without verifying the completion of prerequisite.
- Enforced prerequisite- You will be blocked from registration unless you have verified the completion of prerequisites, have an authorized entry code or COMPASS score placing you eligible for the course.
- Permission of instructor- You will be blocked from registration unless you receive permission from the instructor to register for the class.
What is an entry code?
An entry code is a five-digit number allowing you to register for a class with a prerequisite (see "How to verify completion of prerequisites") or one which requires instructor permission.
How do I verify completion of prerequisites?
If you have taken or are taking the prerequisite at Green River Community College, your prerequisite will be automatically cleared when you register.
If you completed the prerequisite at another educational institution or took an AP/IB test, you must provide documentation to verify that you have satisfied the prerequisite prior to registration.
The course must be taken at a regionally accredited institution; equivalent to the required Green River course and meet the minimum grade requirement.
Documentation may take the form of an official or unofficial transcript issued by the school where you completed the course. An unofficial copy of your AP/IB test report is issued by the testing agency.
The documentation must include the following information:
- Your name (if it does not match the name you use at Green River Community College, you need to provide proof of name change).
- The name of the school where you completed your coursework.
- Course title, grade, number of credits, and when the course was taken.
In progress coursework from another institution cannot be used until your grade has been posted.
General Academic Subjects:
If the prerequisite is in an academic subject area, such as English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry or Psychology, you must submit a request to the Career and Advising Center with your transcript or test report to clear your prerequisite requirement. If approved, your prerequisite will be cleared within 2 business days, and the entry code will be e-mailed to you. If denied, you will be notified by e-mail.
Career and Technical Education Subjects:
If a prerequisite is in a career and technical education subject area, and requires instructor permission only, contact the instructor of the course to review your previous coursework. If approved, you will be given an entry code which can be used to clear the prerequisite block when you register.
Please note: If a prerequisite is approved, it does not mean credit is received for the previous course.
Where do I submit my request for entry codes?
You may submit your documentation in person at the Career and Advising Center or the Welcome Center, online through firstname.lastname@example.org as a PDF document, or via fax at 253-288-3467. If the course requires instructor permission please contact the instructor to request an entry code.
How will I know if my prerequisite is approved?
You will receive an e-mail confirmation after your request has been processed. If approved, your entry code will be e-mailed to you. If denied, you will also be notified by e-mail.
How long will it take to process the request?
Requests are processed in the order they are received. Please allow a response time of up to 2 business days.
