Green River Community College’s Business Technologies and Administrative Careers degree and certificate programs can help you prepare for a rewarding career in business and industry.
Our students acquire technical and soft skills required in today’s business world. In collaboration with our Career and Technical Advisory Committee, we ensure our programs and curricula are relevant and up-to-date.
Our program courses focus on skill development within the Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office applications. Students’ area of study will also include business communication, business math, records management, and soft skill development. Students may choose to specialize in the Medical Front Office or Billing/Coding programs, Legal Administrative Assistant program, or the general Administrative Assistant or Business Application Specialist programs. Julie has taught Business Technologies and Administrative Careers courses at Green River Community College for over twenty years. Prior to teaching at Green River, she taught Business Education courses at the high school level. Julie has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Education and a fifth-year of teaching education from the University of Washington. Julie teaches various classes at GRCC including Beginning and Advanced Microsoft Office application courses, Business Correspondence, and Internship Supervision courses. She is a member of the National Business Education Association. Julie enjoys working with students at Green River and helping them to achieve their goals.

Lea Ann Simpson
Lea Ann has taught Business Technologies and Administrative Careers courses at Green River Community College since 2004. Prior to teaching at Green River, she was tenured faculty at Highline Community College. Her teaching experience includes both secondary and post-secondary levels. She earned both her Bachelor’s and Master's degrees in Business Education at the University of Idaho. Lea Ann is a certified Microsoft Office Specialist. Lea Ann teaches numerous classes at GRCC including Beginning and Advanced Microsoft Office application courses, Business Math, and Internship Supervision courses. She is a member of the National Business Education Association. Lea Ann truly enjoys working with Green River students.

Tonya LaBrosse, MA, CCTC, OTC
Tonya began teaching at Green River Community College in 1999. She earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communications from the University of Washington and a Masters in Organizational Leadership with an additional certification in Servant Leadership from Gonzaga University. She also holds a Community College Teaching Certification from Central Washington University and an Online Teaching Certification from the SLOAN consortium. Tonya teaches a variety of classes including MS Office, Records Management, Information Security, and Office Relations. Tonya is a member of the National Business Education Association, the Washington Association of Occupational Educators, and the National Association of Professional Women. Tonya loves helping students achieve their goals and encourages students to reach for the stars!

Shannon began teaching Medical Office Administration at Green River Community College in 2013. Shannon has experience teaching courses in Medical Coding, Reimbursement and Terminology since 2001. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Workforce Education and Development from Southern Illinois University and is an emphatic believer in the value and necessity of career and technical studies. Shannon is a member of the American Health Information and Management Association (AHIMA) and is a certified medical coder and an AHIMA approved ICD-10 trainer. Shannon's industry experience includes medical office management, working with both professional (outpatient) and facility (inpatient) coding and reimbursement. Shannon has a passion for providing student focused curriculum and instruction in a variety of ways to capture and meet the needs of all learning styles.

The Business Technologies and Administrative Careers department offers a variety of degree and certificate programs! We offer the following four degree options:
- Administrative Assistant
- Business Applications Specialist
- Legal Administrative Assistant
- Medical Office Administration
There are also numerous certificate options available to you. If you want to work in an office environment, but need the skills and education to make your dreams a reality, we can help!
You may enroll in any of the Business Technologies and Administrative Careers programs at the beginning of any quarter. The program hours are flexible with day, evening and online classes.
It depends on you.
If you attend full time, the Associate in Applied Arts degree requirements may be completed in six to eight quarters and many of the certificate requirements may be completed in four. If you attend part time, completion will depend on how many credits you earn each quarter.
Our programs are designed for students who need to get to work quickly and are not designed as part of a transfer program. All transferability of our program courses to four-year institutions is at the discretion of the receiving institution.
Students should contact an advisor at the college to which they intend to transfer.
