To say Steve Trott (’74) didn’t enjoy high school would be an understatement. “Green River offered such freedom. I really envy those kids today who can take part in the Running Start program when they are juniors and seniors in high school,” says Steve. Attending from 1972 to 1974, Steve earned an Associate in Arts degree, taking courses in everything from History of Civilization to Ceramics to Fencing. “You can’t take that many electives at the four-year universities. They just don’t have room in the classes for non-majors. But at Green River, you can try almost anything,” Steve points out. “When I decided to come to Green River, I knew I could have pursued a business degree at the UW, but my father had recently started the family business (Trotter’s Restaurant) so I was already in business. I wanted to take courses that interested me,” says Steve. “And, like any great education, it stuck. I use percentages all the time at Trotter’s, and when I developed an interest in collecting Roman Coins, the history I had been taught was still there.” Steve studied with some of Green River’s pioneer faculty, and was impressed enough to have instant recall of their names thirty years later. “Dave Mowrer taught Economics 201, and not only knew the subject matter, he was an amazing teacher,” Steve recalls. Steve was so impressed with his experience at Green River that he has set up a program that he offers tuition assistance to the young people who work in his restaurant. “Green River is a great opportunity and it’s right here in our own back yard. Take advantage of it.”
