COMPASS Assessment

The Assessment and Testing Center is now located on the Main Campus in the Zgolinski Welcome Center (ZWC). - See Map.

COMPASS is a computerized assessment given to all new students. The purpose of COMPASS is to ensure that every student is placed in English and math classes that are appropriate for his or her academic skill level.

Get to know the COMPASS

  • Familiarize yourself with the format of the COMPASS assessment by going online and try some sample questions.

  • There are also multiple copies of the book “Chart your success on the COMPASS test” available for check out in the Holman Library. The call number is 378.1662 C734c 2006

  • If you feel you need some practice before taking the math section of the COMPASS, try our Sample Entrance Exams. Here you will find problems pertinent to each of our math class levels (Math 070, Math 072, Math 097, Math 102, and Math 124).  Please note that each Entrance Exam Sample contains prerequisite material for that course.  For example, the Math 070 Entrance Exam Sample includes topics covered in courses prior to Math 70.

Steps to Taking COMPASS

  2. Pay the $12.40 fee to take the COMPASS. You will be able to pay the fee at the Testing Center.

  4. Receive your scores. Upon completion of COMPASS, you will receive your scores from Testing Center personnel.

  5. You are encouraged to bring your own calculator as long as it meets ACT guidelines.

GED Testing

The GED test is offered every Monday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on a walk-in basis.

You may take the GED if you are age 19 or older. However, if you are 16 to 18 years of age, you may take the GED if you bring an original, signed form from the district office in the school district where you live. This form is called “Request for Approval to Test for Certificate of Educational Competence.” You cannot take the GED without this form if you are under age 19.

Exception for home-schooled students: If you are under age 19 and have been home-schooled, you must either obtain the "Request for Approval to Test" mentioned above, or you may choose to have your parent or guardian write a letter stating that you have completed a home-school program, and have this letter notarized. This letter will serve in place of the "Request for Approval to Test" form.

Steps to Taking the GED

  1. If you are 16, 17, or 18 years old, obtain your "Request for Approval to Test" form.
  2. Come to the Testing Center any Monday between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m.; bring your under-age waiver if required (above) and current, government-issued, picture ID (i.e. driver's license or passport).
  3. Pay the $75 GED fee at the Testing Center.

You may take as many of these tests as you wish in one day. Some people choose to take one test every Monday until completion; some take all five in one day.

You must arrive at the Testing Center with sufficient time to complete your test of choice before the center closes. We will not let you start a test if there is not the fully allotted amount of time for that test remaining before we close. If you do not pass one of the tests, you may re-take it for a fee of $15.00.

Note: A new test series will start in January 2012. Previous test scores will not carry over so you will want to make sure you have completed your current series of tests before that date.

Exams for Green River Classes

Many Green River instructors arrange for students to take their tests in the Assessment & Testing Center rather than in the classroom.

If your instructor plans to use the Testing Center, he or she will let you know which day the testing will take place. You may come any time on the designated day during the following hours:

  • Monday - Thursday 8:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
  • Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
  • Saturday: 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Steps to Taking a Classroom Test

  1. Please plan to arrive at the Testing Center with sufficient time to complete your test before the center closes. We close at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, and at 12:00 noon on Saturday. In order to minimize the amount of time waiting in line, we encourage students to come to the Center before 9 a.m. or after 2:00 p.m.

  2. You must present picture ID to receive a test.

  3. You must be prepared to provide the name of your instructor and the name of your class (i.e. Psychology 100).

Some tests require use of a scantron. Check your syllabus to see if your instructor intends to use these for testing. You can buy scantrons at the Paper Tree Bookstore.

For any questions on the Assessment & Testing Center not answered here, please call (253) 833-9111, ext. 2650.

The Assessment & Testing Center will be closed Friday morning, August 8th.  We will re-open from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m.
---------------------------------------

We can also proctor tests for other schools
If you are taking a distance-ed or online course through another college and need a site to proctor your exam, we will do this for you. The fee is $12.40, payable at the Testing Center. You may give our name and address to your instructor and have them send the exam to us.

Note: We do not accept e-mailed exams.
