Coaching Staff

Head Coach, Matt Acker

     2009-10 marks Coach Acker's ninth season as the Head of Green River baseball.  In 2007 and again on 2009, Coach Acker directed the Gators to third place finishes at the NWAACC Championship.  Over his career Coach Acker has been extremely successful at moving the sophomores in the program on to a four year school or into the baseball draft.
     Prior to coming to GRCC, Coach Acker spent two years as an assistant coach at St. Martin's University, where he had the responsibilities of pitching/outfield coach, and recruiting coordinator. 
     Acker has also been very active in summer baseball in the Puget Sound area.
Currently Coach Acker coaches the Kitsap BlueJackets of the West Coast Collegiate League in the summer.  He led the expansion franchise to its first winning season in his second year 2006.  In his third season with the BlueJacket’s he took the team into the 2007 WCCBL playoffs.
     He started coaching Legion baseball in Lacey, WA at the age of 20.  He has been the Head Coach for MVP Athletics (Olympia), Riptide  (Puyallup) and Triple Play (Tacoma). Triple Play won the NABAF World Series in San Diego in 2003 while Acker was the Head Coach. 

     As a player, Acker played three years at Central Washington University and summer ball for the West Seattle Cruisers of the Pacific International League. At Central he pitched and played outfield. Matt was awarded the "Most Inspirational Player Award" during his senior season.
     Coach Acker and his wife Kira reside in Olympia, with their four year old son Kole.

Assistant Coach, Scott Kelly

     Prior to joining the Gator coaching staff in 2009 Coach Kelly spent the previous five years coaching at Missouri Valley College. First serving as the pitching coach in 2004 then was promoted to Head Coach in 2005. In four years as the Head Coach, Coach Kelly guided the Vikings to a 107-68 record and two post seasons appearances. In his tenure at Missouri Valley College he coached several drafted players and seven NAIA All-Americans.

     Coach Kelly started his coaching career in Casper Wyoming, where in 2003 his American Legion team won the Wyoming Jr. Legion State Championship. In 2004 the Casper Barons moved up to Senior Legion level and lost in the State championship game. In the summer of 2008, Coach Kelly also served as the pitching coach for the Kelowna Falcons of the WCCBL under head coach Kevin Frady (University of Kansas).

     As a player in 1996 Kelly helped lead the Gators to a third place finish in the NWAACC championship. Following Green River he moved on to NAIA national power house Lewiston-Clark State College to play for Legendary coach Ed Cheff.  After a set back with injuries he transferred to Missouri Valley College where in 2001 was selected as the Conference and Regional Pitcher of the year as well as a second team All-American. In June of 2001 was selected in the 25th round of the amateur draft by the San Diego Padres. Coach Kelly Played three years before injuries and other interest (Coaching) brought his career to an end.

Assistant Coach, Rich Heaton

Assistant Coach, Scott Hinson

2009 is Coach Hinson's first season as an assistant coach on the staff.  Hinson played baseball at Central Washington University for three seasons before shoulder injuries ended his career.  Prior to CWU he played one season at Tacoma CC, and high school ball at Rogers (Puyallup).

Coach Hinson is a former minor league hockey player, and currently works full-time as a Firefighter for East Pierce Fire & Rescue.  Hinson and his wife Erica live in Buckley with their three year old daughter MacKenzie.
