Men's Tennis - 2009 NWAACC Champions!!

The 2009 Green River men’s tennis team capped off their undefeated season and reclaimed the prestigious Steve Sauers trophy for winning the NWAACC Tennis Championship held in Spokane.   Green River took home five of the nine championship medals on their way to 133 team points.  Spokane finished second with 109.

For the women, Green River concluded the year with an impressive second place finish at the NWAACC Championships behind five time defending champion Bellevue.  The Gators posted 98 points to Bellevue’s 134.
Freshman Jodi Owen (pictured on the left) was crowned as the champion in the number one singles draw to lead the Gators.  Green River athletes finished second in three other events, losing all to Bellevue.

In Golf, Green River women also posted a second place finish at the Championships hosted by Walla Walla.  Sophomore Jenna (Rochelle) Witmer (pictured on right) brought home the individual crown as the low female of the tournament.  Down by four strokes as a team after the first day, the Gators were unable to mount a charge against eventual champion Spokane.  Spokane posted a score of 472, Green River finished with a 482, Bellevue placed third with a score of 508.

For their efforts Green River coaches Mike McDonnell (tennis) and Jennifer Von Doehren (women’s golf) were selected as the NWAACC Coaches of the Year for their respective sports.

May 27, 2009 -  Gator Baseball Takes Home Third at NWAACC's

The Memorial Day weekend provided the Green River baseball program with many fond moments on their way to a third place finish at the NWAACC Championships held in Longview, WA.

After a 10-6 opening round loss to eventual champion Bellevue, the Gators were determined to not be sent home early.  On Friday, the Gators used a grand slam home run by Aaron Johnson to defeat Treasure Valley  5-1.  Jake Shadle earned the pitching victory while Antone Saltvick received a three inning save.

Day three saw the Gators win another loser out contest in dramatic fashion when they came from behind against Skagit Valley with four runs in the eighth inning to topple the Cardinal 4-2.  GRCC shortstop Cody Brooks’ two RBI single was the knockout blow.  Antone Saltvick pitched his second strong contest earning the victory in relief.

Finally on Sunday the Gator momentum came to a halt against Columbia Basin.  Pitcher Bryce Bowell gave a strong performance scattering CBC batters through five innings allowing Green River to take a 3-2 lead.  However a two out error by GRCC in the sixth opened the flood gates that Columbia Basin was eager to rush through.  Seven runs later the Gators were down 9-3 and would not recover.  The team secured Green River’s third place finish for the sedond time in three seasons.  Antone Saltvick and Zach Gagnon were selected to the all-tournament team for their efforts.

June 6, 2008  Gator Ace Drafted by Anaheim Angels

Gator pitching ace Christian Scholl was selected this morning in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball 2008 draft by the Los Angeles Angels.  In two seasons at Green River, the 5’11, 195 lb flame thrower set the school’s single season strikeout record in 2007 with 81 K’s and then broke his record this year with 85.  A two time first team All-NWAACC West Region selection, Scholl had earlier in the season signed an NCAA letter of intent to play at Washington State University.

The Tacoma, WA (Stadium HS) native was the highest NWAACC player picked in this years draft as the 259th pick and was the fourth player from the state of Washington.  A career 2.57 ERA, with 12 victories for Green River, Scholl frustrated opponents at the plate for two seasons giving up a meager .191 batting average when he was on the mound.
