June 7, 2010 - Athletic Celebration Closes Out Year

 

     At the annual Green River Student Life Awards Banquet, Athletic Director Bob Kickner and the ASGRCC student leadership presented the Female and Male Athlete of the Year awards to Caitlyn Duggan (Kent, WA) and Brok Pendleton (Auburn, WA) respectively. 

  Duggan (pictured on left) was a two time first team All West softball player for the Gators.  In 2010 she led the team to their second consecutive trip to the NWAACC Champions tournament with a .438 batting average while earning eight pitching victories on the season as well. 
 

  Pendleton (on right) finished his basketball career as a Western Region second team all star, earned all-academic honors and help the team to their first appearance at the NWAACC Championship tournament since 2002.   He will be attending Saint Martins University in Lacey, WA to finish his academic and playing career.

Cummings Joins NWAACC Hall of Fame

 

  Former Gator basketball great, Tim Cummings (Auburn, WA) was inducted into the NW Athletic Association of Community Colleges Hall of Fame at the annual banquet held on Thursday night at the Bellevue Red Lion Hotel. 
  After playing for a state championship team at Renton HS, Cummings joined Coach Bob Aubert's Gator basketball program in 1967 where they promptly advanced to the title game.  Then in 1968, the first team all league performer led the Gators to the 1969 tournament championships. Cummings moved to the University of Idaho where he completed his playing career at the NCAA Division I program. 
  Currently the superintendent for personnel in the Auburn, WA school district, Cummings previously spent 13 years as a high school basketball coach amassing a 249-93 career record.  Cummings joins Green River legends Steve Sauers, Mike Willis, Bob Aubert, Karen Bryant, Jack Johnson and Brian Stanley who are already in the NWAACC Hall of Fame.

  Sometimes big things do come in small packages.  5'2, Sophomore, Caral Martinson won her second consecutive NWAACC tournament this weekend when she posted back to back rounds of 73 to clear the field by seven strokes.  Meanwhile her teammates Courtney Tappon's 162 and Annie Viola's 166 combined to give the GRCC women an eight stroke victory over Spokane CC to win the Bigfoot Invitational at Esmerelda Golf Club in Spokane on Monday.

 

  With nine teams in the field, Green River and Spokane are building up a competitive rivalry that will come to a head at the NWAACC Championships in May.  Next up for the Gators is the Trailblazer Tournament hosted by Centralia College.

March 2, 2010: Gator Men Qualify for NWAACC Tournament

 

  Sophomore's Jake Wilcox (pictured to the left) and Brok Pendleton threw the proverbial monkey off the back of the Gator basketball program when they sealed their spot in the 2010 NWAACC tournament as the #4 seed from the West.  This was the first time since 2002 that the Gators have made the trip to Kennewick.

 

  While there the Gators stunned #1 Shoreline in the opening round with an 80-76 victory behind 29 points from Chris Plooy.  Green River lost in the quarterfinals to eventual Champion Clackamas 77-87, and then was dumped from the double elimination tournament on Monday when Mount Hood CC disposed of Green River 70-56. 

 

February 1, 2010 - Top Scholar Athletes Attend Leadership Summit

 

  On Monday over 70 students leaders participated in the first GRCC annual student leadership summit featuring renowned student trainer Del Suggs.  Focusing on collaborating with other student service departments, athletics joined with student government, commencement achievement, and clubs to promote student on campus engagement.   Suggs spent the afternoon sessions focusing on identifying the qualities and traits of leaders, how to market those strengths and how student leaders impact the college campus.

NWAACC Honors Gator Fall Sports


   With the conclusion of the 2009 fall sports seasons, the NWAACC handed out its post season recognition at the annual championship events. 

 

In Volleyball, Sophomore Libero, Samantha Potts (Graham, WA) earned second team all-Western Region recognition for her standout defensive performance.  Ashley Parries (Auburn, WA) was named as an honorable mention honoree. 
 
While in Soccer, Sophomores captains Carli McCrabb (Auburn, WA), BriAnn White (Kent, WA), and Erica Kobe (Bonney Lake, WA) were selected All Western Region soccer for the second year in a row.  McCrabb finishes her Gator career as the second all-time leading scorer in school history.  She led the team with ten goals scored this season, including four in a single contest against Olympic College.


  

   

May 28, 2009 - Tennis and Golf Bring Home the Hardware


Men's Tennis - 2009 NWAACC Champions!!


 

The 2009 Green River men’s tennis team capped off their undefeated season and reclaimed the prestigious Steve Sauers trophy for winning the NWAACC Tennis Championship held in Spokane.   Green River took home five of the nine championship medals on their way to 133 team points.  Spokane finished second with 109.  
 

For the women, Green River concluded the year with an impressive second place finish at the NWAACC Championships behind five time defending champion Bellevue.  The Gators posted 98 points to Bellevue’s 134. 
Freshman Jodi Owen (pictured on the left) was crowned as the champion in the number one singles draw to lead the Gators.  Green River athletes finished second in three other events, losing all to Bellevue.

 

December 9, 2008 - Holiday Auction Receives Warm Reception

  Two of Green River Community College’s most well known Major League Baseball players had their GRCC jerseys retired at the second annual GRCC holiday auction and banquet on December 6.

  Former New York Met standout Doug Sisk and current Milwaukee Brewer David Riske were honored at GRCC’s the event by having their GRCC jersey retired.   Riske began his Major league career with the Cleveland Indians. He has played for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, and Kansas City Royals before signing with the Brewers in 2008. Riske, a right-handed relief pitcher, has a career 20-20 record.

Sisk made his major league debut with the New York Mets in 1982. He compiled a 22-20 record as a relief pitcher for the Mets and was a member of the 1986 World Series championship team that defeated the Boston Red Sox. He finished his Major League Baseball career with the Atlanta Braves in 1991.
