He’s back! After a four year hiatus to enjoy the merits of being a retired educator, legendary girl’s basketball coach Dennis Olson was announced as the head women’s basketball coach at Green River Community College in 2007. For 19 seasons, Olson coached the Auburn High School girls’ basketball team to unparalleled success. With a record of 402-66, Olson led Auburn HS to 16 Washington State tournaments including seven championship game performances. With two state titles, Olson was named the 1990 National Federation of High School District 8 Coach of the Year. In 1992 Olson was selected as the Washington State Coach of the Year, and then in 2000 was selected by the Seattle Times as the Girls High School Coach of the Century for Washington State. In 1998 Olson proved his successful formula would work at the college level as he moved to Highline CC where for five seasons he coached the Lady Thunderbirds to a 110-38 record. The team capped an unprecedented run in his first season to the NWAACC Championship contest before finishing with the runner-up trophy.
Former Green River player, Mary Layton returns to GRCC to take on the role of assistant coach after completing her playing career at Cascade College in Portland, OR. Coach Layton will be given the responsibility of post player development, recruiting coordinator and administrative assistant. Mary resides in Buckley, WA. |
