PE Building Description

The Physical Education Building was constructed in 1967. Many of the building components are old, in disrepair and no longer serve the instructional needs of the college. Many of the program spaces, designed for early curricula, are no longer adequate for current philosophies of instruction. The building does not comply with modern life safety codes nor does it provide adequate access to students with disabilities.

The PE building has been identified in the Instructional Plan and the Facilities Master Plan as one of the College’s core buildings. The college foresees continued use of this building for physical education instruction in the future.

The failure of key components of the building, inadequacy of program space for current instructional needs, and the life safety defects from the original construction cannot be ignored. The severity of the need for building upgrades is supported by the 2005-2007 Facilities Survey “Building Condition Rating.”

A comprehensive renovation of the PE building will replace the failing infrastructure components; renovate facility spaces to meet current instructional, Americans with Disabilities Act and Title IX compliance needs; and replace or augment life safety features of the building to ensure compliance with current codes. The goal of the proposed renovation is to extend the useful life of the PE building for another 30 years.

This renovation project will have a major impact on the delivery of instruction to a majority of Green River students. All of the academic degrees as well as the college-awarded high school diplomas require fitness-related activities. In addition to classroom usage, the facility is used on an annual basis for commencement ceremonies in June, and the college’s Artist & Speaker series. The college also rents the space to the community for larger events and conferences. Green River strongly supports college athletic events and hosts conferences in basketball and volleyball as well as NWAAC Tournaments such as women’s volleyball.

Construction will begin in spring 2008. Some of the needed renovations will require closure of the major program areas for several months, so planning will be required to limit the closure of the facility to the summer months.
