Project History Kent Campus I History The City of Kent and Tarragon Development, in a public-private partnership, are developing Kent Station, a realization of the city’s vision to create a downtown that is the focal point and identity of the community. Kent Station is located near Sound Transit’s Sounder Commuter Rail Station and parking garage, the existing downtown and the King County Regional Justice Center. Between 2000 and 2010, the populations of Auburn and Kent are projected to increase by 8.5 percent. Kent is now the largest community in South King County, with 84,000 residents. With that growth in mind, the City of Kent, Kent School District and Kent Chamber of Commerce strongly encouraged Green River to relocate from a leased facility in Kent to the new Kent Station project and expand its delivery of education and training services. In 2003 the college requested and received authorization to use the state’s lease and purchase program to finance the purchase of a condominium portion of a 40,000 square foot retail building in the new Kent Station project. Kent Campus I was to be located on the second floor with ground floor entry and staff office space. This location also provided the future opportunity for Tarragon Development to enter into an agreement to construct and sell the college a second condominium, the Kent Campus II facility, which will be adjacent to Kent Campus I and physically connected by sky bridges. Completed in August 2005, Kent Campus I is a 22,600 square-foot facility that provides excellent public transportation opportunities for students and staff. This new classroom and office building in Kent Station incorporates state-of-the-art technology and flexible classroom configurations capable of responding to the ever-changing needs of the community. By locating in the Kent Station project, the college is improving service to the communities in the northern portion of our service district, as well as allowing the college to expand its offerings by delivering general studies programs. By offering core classes at a satellite campus, the college is providing easily accessible programs and services to a greater number of students in its delivery area. Kent Campus II As part of the college’s Facilities Master Plan, Kent Campus II is conceived as a 40,000 square-foot facility physically connected to Kent Campus I that will house additional classrooms, labs, faculty offices and student service functions and provide opportunities for the college to expand its offerings and services. Currently under consideration for Kent Campus Phase II are programs and courses culminating in direct transfer associate degrees in engineering and computer science, as well as pilot training, flight dispatch and related aviation courses — programs that lead to high-demand, high-wage careers. In addition, a complete slate of core academic transfer courses will be offered at Kent Campus Phase II, which will help support a large and growing population of Running Start students. Finally, teacher preparation courses, health science programs, Adult Basic Education, General Educational Development, English as a Second Language, high school completion courses and courses that complement the adjacent Regional Justice Center, such as computer reporting technologies, will increase academic course sections and increase time-to-completion rates. In 2007 the college requested and received authorization to use the state’s lease and purchase program to finance the purchase of the Kent Campus II condominium. The design and permitting stage will occur September 2007 – February 2008 with construction to begin in late spring 2008. It is anticipated construction will be completed early Spring 2009. Kent Campus II will be operational by Fall 2009. Timeline and Scope For an up-to-date timeline and scope for this project, please refer to the most recent Progress Reports |
