Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress
Policy 2007-2008
You are required to maintain satisfactory
academic progress in order to be eligible for financial aid. The college
looks at all attempted credits regardless of the source of tuition payment.
This policy defines what is meant by satisfactory academic progress
and lists the rules related to it.
Green River’s policy consists of three
basic requirements. These are:
QUALITATIVE
You are required to maintain a minimum grade
point average (GPA) of 2.0 each quarter, and you will be required to
have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 at the end of your sixth quarter
of attendance.
QUANTITY
You must complete a specified number of credits each quarter. Normally this means all credits that you attempt
during a quarter. (See chart below).
TIME FRAME
Your college programs must be completed within the equivalent of nine full-time quarters of attendance
(for 100 level classes and above). This period includes transfer credits which count toward your program of
study. Nine quarters allow time for prerequisites and/or changes in programs of study. Financial Aid only covers
course work that counts toward your eligible program of study. If you are half-time (6-8 credits) you will be
considered for financial aid during your first 18 quarters of attendance; if you are three-quarter (9-11) you will be
considered for financial aid during your first 12 quarters of attendance. If you are attending less than half-time, you
will be considered for assistance during the equivalent of your first nine full-time quarters of attendance. Court
Reporting students are allowed the equivalent of 15 full-time quarters of attendance for financial aid consideration.
The following chart indicates the number of credits that should be completed quarterly to be considered in good academic standing.

Probation Status
-
If you are on Probation Status, you are eligible to receive financial aid.
-
If you did not complete the required number of credits or your quarterly GPA was between 1.5–1.99, you are placed on probation
status.
-
You can be placed on probation two times.
Termination/Suspension Status
-
You are not eligible to receive financial aid or work-study funds when terminated.
-
You may be terminated after only one quarter of attendance. Probation quarters do not necessarily come before a quarter of
termination status. The quarterly grade point and credits completed determine your academic standing.
-
If you have already had two quarters of probation, you will lose financial aid eligibility the next time credits are dropped or the quarterly
grade point falls below 2.0.
-
If you fail to complete the required credits indicated on the chart,
or your quarterly GPA drops below 1.5, or your cumulative GPA is
less than 2.0 at the end of the sixth quarter of attendance, you will be terminated from eligibility.
-
If you officially or unofficially withdraw after the first day of the quarter and complete no credits, you will lose financial aid eligibility.
A repayment of grant funds may also be required if you did not “earn” all of your financial aid based upon your days of class
attendance. In addition, if the college is required to refund tuition funds to federal accounts in excess of the state tuition refund policy,
you will be billed for the amount of the additional refund.
Appeal of Financial Aid Termination
Sometimes a student’s failure to maintain academic progress results from circumstances beyond his or her control. If you should find
yourself in this situation, you may request reinstatement of financial aid by filing an appeal form along with supporting documentation.
The appeal forms (petitions) are available in the Financial Aid Office. You may be required to take developmental or part-time course work
and complete an educational plan as a condition of an academic progress appeal.
Reinstatement of Financial Aid
If you are terminated from financial aid, you are not entitled to financial aid and are required to pay your own tuition. To be reinstated,
full-time students will be asked to pay for one quarter and to complete at least 12 credits with a 2.0 quarterly GPA; half-time students
will be required to complete six credit hours in one quarter with a 2.0 quarterly GPA; and three-quarter time students will be required
to complete nine credits with a 2.0 quarterly GPA. Students enrolled less than half-time will be asked to complete the number of credits
attempted at the time of termination.
Additional Information about the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy
-
You may receive financial aid to take up to 45 credits of developmental courses (courses below 100-level).
-
You may repeat a class once to improve your grade for financial aid purposes as long as you did not previously receive a
3.5-4.0 grade point in the class. You may not receive financial aid to pay for a class in which you were awarded an “I”
(incomplete) grade.
-
Grades of 0.0 – 0.6, I, N, W, NC or Y do not count toward completed credits.
-
Adult Basic Education (ABE), G.E.D. Preparation, English as a Second Language, Continuing Education, some High School Completion
classes, non-credit classes, and Parenting classes do not apply toward financial aid eligibility or attempted credits for the period of
enrollment.
-
If you complete a financial aid application file late in the year, you can be
paid retroactively for quarters already completed during
the current academic year, as long as you were considered in good academic standing for the prior quarter(s)
and at the time your
financial aid eligibility is determined.
-
You must be working toward an eligible degree or certificate program to receive financial aid, and the classes must apply toward
the degree or certificate program at Green River.
-
If you are transferring to Green River, you will be considered to be making satisfactory academic progress at the time of your
transfer. Credits transferring into your program of study will be counted toward the nine-quarter maximum eligibility time limit.
-
If you complete your degree or certificate programs in
less than nine quarters, you can be considered for financial aid for a second
degree or certificate program. Nine quarters of attendance (counting 100 level classes and above) are considered the maximum time
period for financial aid eligibility for two-year degrees. Extensions beyond that are granted only under very exceptional circumstances
through a petition process.
-
If you have a documented disability, you can be allowed reasonable accommodation to make up credits and improve grades. These
decisions will be based on individual circumstances and determined by the Financial Aid Office.
