General Requirements & Guidelines

Foundation scholarship recipients must be enrolled at Green River to utilize their scholarship unless otherwise noted.

Specific amounts of scholarship awards vary depending upon available funds.

Eligibility

I don’t qualify for Federal Aid.  Am I still eligible to apply for a Foundation Scholarship?

Absolutely.  While all applicants are encouraged to apply for federal assistance, the Foundation uses a broader definition of need.  Many people who don’t qualify for financial aid may qualify for a Foundation Scholarship.

Can I use my Foundation Scholarship at another school?

Foundation Scholarships are ONLY for use at GRCC.  The only exception is the Sharp Transfer Scholarship that is awarded to a GRCC graduate who is transferring to a Washington state public college or university.

If I don’t fit all of the criteria for a particular scholarship, should I still apply for it?

No.  You need to make sure that you fit all criteria for a scholarship before you apply for it.

Application Process

I received a Foundation Scholarship in 2007-2008.  Do I need to re-apply?

You must re-apply for Foundation Scholarships each academic year.

Where can I get another application form?

Additional applications are available in the Financial Aid office, located on the 2nd floor of the Lindbloom Student Center.  You can also download a copy of the application from the web: Application.

Do I need to submit an official transcript?

No.  Unofficial transcripts are acceptable.

I have been out of school for a long time.  What records do I need to submit?

If you have not attended high school or college in the last five years, you should submit a transcript of your most recent academic work.

Who should fill out my Letter of Recommendation form?

Someone who knows the applicant well should fill out the Letter of Recommendation form.  Examples are:  faculty members, high school teachers, school administrators, or employers.  It is best to have one Letter of Recommendation form completed by someone who can speak directly to your scholastic abilities. It should not, however, be a relative of the applicant.

May a Letter of Recommendation be submitted instead of the Letter of Recommendation form?

No.  Please have the person making the recommendation fill out the form.  The person filling out the form may attach their comments on a separate piece of paper.  Letters attached without a recommendation form will not be considered.

I have three people willing to fill out the Letter of Recommendation form for me.  May I submit more than one Letter of Recommendation?

Up to three Letters of Recommendation forms will be accepted with each scholarship application.  Any additional Letters of Recommendation will not be duplicated for review by committee members.

Does the Letter of Recommendation form need to be mailed directly to the Financial Aid Office?

No.  The Letter of Recommendation form, along with the appropriate supplemental questions, should be submitted with the scholarship application.

Do I have to apply for Financial Aid?

We always recommend that students apply for financial aid especially if they feel that they qualify for need scholarships.  However, it is not necessary to have need under the financial aid standards to show need for Foundation scholarships.

Where do I submit my application?

You may drop it off at the Financial Aid Office on the 2nd floor of the Lindbloom Student Center.  Or, you may mail your application to:  Green River Community College, M/S: FA, 12401 SE 320th St., Auburn, WA  98092.  All applications must be received in the Financial Aid Office by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, April 30th to be considered with the initial pool of applicants.  Faxed and electronic submissions are not accepted.

It’s after April 30, 2008.  Can I still apply for a scholarship?

Yes, you can still apply for a scholarship, but you will only be considered for those that have not been filled.  Before you apply, check with the Foundation Office at (253) 288-3330 to see which scholarships are still available.  This list will be available around July 1st.

Should I type my application?

You are encouraged to type your application.  If you cannot, make sure your application is legible.

My application is not complete.  Should I submit the application anyway?

No.  Incomplete applications will not be considered.  Application materials are available each year from February 1 – April 30.  This provides adequate time for students to complete applications.

Do any of the scholarships require an interview?

Yes.  Several of the scholarships will require an interview with finalists as part of the selection process.  Only the top candidates for each scholarship will be invited for an interview.  Interviews will happen in May or early June.  A member of the Scholarship Committee will call to arrange the interview.

Who chooses the scholarship recipients?

A committee of 4-6 GRCC employees and community members select the recipients for most scholarship recipients.  Faculty members select some program scholarships.  The contributor is involved with the final selection for some scholarships.

How will I know if I’ve received a scholarship?

Every applicant will receive a notification letter after July 1st stating whether or not he or she received a scholarship.  The Foundation attempts to award all scholarships by August 15th each year.

Other questions

My tuition and books are covered by another program.  Can I use a Foundation Scholarship to cover other expenses?

Generally, no.  Foundation Scholarships may be used to cover tuition and purchase textbooks in the Paper Tree.   Childcare scholarships may be used to cover childcare expenses at the GRCC Childcare Center.   Foundation Scholarships may not be used to cover other living expenses.

Will I get a refund if I don’t use all of my scholarship?

No.  Foundation Scholarships only pay tuition and book expenses.

If I don’t use my scholarship, may I transfer the money to another student?

No.  If you do not use all of your scholarship, the balance will be carried forward and used in future years for scholarship students selected by the Scholarship Committee.

What are my responsibilities if I receive a scholarship?

  • All scholarship students will have 30 days after receiving their notification letter to let the Foundation office know if they are accepting the scholarship.  If the Foundation office does not receive acceptance in that time, the scholarship will be awarded to an alternate.

  • All scholarship applicants must submit a letter of thanks to the contributor that made the scholarship possible within 30 days of receiving the notification letter.

  • All scholarship applicants are asked to attend the scholarship banquet held in the fall to meet the contributors to their scholarship. The banquet will be held in November 2008.

  • All scholarship applicants should be prepared to join their contributor at a lunch sometime during the 2008-09 school year.

  • Many scholarship recipients will be asked to speak at a Foundation event at some point during the 2008-09 school year.
