GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Network Engineer is a member of the Enterprise Services team within the IT department and reports directly to the Director of Technical Services. This critical position is responsible for the college wide LAN, WAN, network and telecom infrastructure, building firewalls, routers, switches, security, backup recovery processes, complex problem identification, resolution and troubleshooting, and hardware and software support acquisitions.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Manage and configure Cisco Routers, APs, PIX Firewalls, and Cisco & HP Switches for successful network infrastructure operations.
  • Provide technical support for Avaya Telephone Systems.
  • Monitor network management systems, log files and alerts for potential security issues or suspicious activity.
  • Resolve complex network equipment issues. Use diagnostic equipment, scripts and or software tools to determine network issues.
  • Perform regular network maintenance activities such as:
    • Manage, evaluate, and document network resources for effective and efficient usage, such as the activation of network drops and IP address pools.
    • Research, design, and implement new network infrastructure technologies, services, and software.
    • Apply security updates, application updates, operating system updates and patches, and firmware updates.
  • Participate in information technology network strategic planning, capitol projects, development, and implementation.
  • Communicate with vendors and supervisor on hardware and software developments; research, review, and recommend equipment for network hardware and software acquisitions.
  • Participate in meetings with administration, departments, faculty, and staff to develop, implement or interpret new or revised technology initiatives.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Must have the ability to sit for prolonged period of time at a desk/computer workstation.
  • Frequent repetitive arm, hand, and finger motions.
  • Frequent use of computer and exposure to terminal screen in performing work assignments.
  • Work in a semi-open office setting with frequent interruptions.
  • Be available for non-scheduled after hours support of hardware and software.
  • Be mobile enough to climb under and over desks and equipment to review configurations.
  • May need to carry, lift or move equipment up to 25 lbs and occasionally up to 75 lbs.
  • Occasionally kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb ladders.
  • Utilize hand tools and small power tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of four (4) years as a Network Engineer. Experience should include the use of a wide range of networking equipment, including advanced knowledge and skills relating to switches, routers, packet shapers, firewalls, VOIP, Wireless devices, etc. This experience should be primarily with equipment manufactured by Cisco, HP and AVAYA in an enterprise WAN/LAN windows environment.
  • Have experience with most LAN and WAN architectures including Ethernet, Spanning Tree, ISL, and Point-to-Point circuits.
  • Understand routing protocols like OSPF, HSRP, and network based ACL’s.
  • Experience with network management platforms and protocols such as SNMP, RMON and MRTG.
  • Experience with Enterprise Network Security – IDS, VPNs, SSL, Proxy servers, F5 and Firewalls (PIX & ASA).
  • Ability to utilize industry standard network protocols: HTTP, TCP/IP, FTP, QoS, 802.1X, 802.11 in the maintenance of a large scale enterprise network.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects and responsibilities at the same time. Able to deal with changing priorities.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

This is a 40 hour per week, 12-month per year, overtime exempt position.  Salary range is $54,504 to $71,496 per year.  Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday. Occasionally hours will vary to meet business needs.

Tuition fee waiver program after six months of employment. The waiver would include all or a portion of tuition, services, and activities fees at most Washington state colleges and universities.

Appointment to this position includes a state benefits package of health and dental plans, participation in a Washington State Department of Retirement Systems plan, sick leave, vacation, and paid holidays.  Other fringe benefits include convenient daycare and on-campus fitness center.

A union shop agreement exists for this position which requires membership in the Washington Federation of State Employees within 30 days of hire.
