POSITION PURPOSE:

This position announcement has been revised to include an Educational Planner for the new GRCC Welcome Center.  All current applicants will be reviewed for both positions.

As part of the Career and Advising Center team and reporting to the Director of Career and Advising Services, the Educational Planner's primary function is to assist enrolled and prospective students in the development of meaningful educational goals by providing developmental educational planning assistance. In addition, this position will be responsible for developing and managing programs and services to support enrolled and prospective students.

This position requires familiarity with transfer programs and the Washington State Direct Transfer Agreement, professional and technical programs, and developmental education. This position will also need to possess an awareness of Basic Skills (Adult Basic Education, English Speakers of Other Languages, High School Completion, etc) programs and be able to provide transitional advising for students in these programs.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Advising

  • Assist students in linking career and life goals to educational programs and services.

  • Provide transitional advising and developmental advising for new and prospective students in basic skills, developmental education, academic transfer, and professional - technical options; clarify degree and transfer requirements; interpret assessment scores; articulate college policies and procedures; and assist in course selection and the development of individualized educational plans.

  • Serve as a resource and advocate for students and assist students in becoming self-directed in the educational planning process.

Program Development

  • Identify, develop, implement, and oversee new programs and services as the needs of our students and community change.
  • Identify trends and best practices through literature review, research, campus visitations, and professional development opportunities.

Communication and Collaboration

  • In collaboration with faculty and staff, develop and conduct workshops, seminars and presentations to support the needs of a diverse student population. Assist in promotion and evaluation of educational planning services and resources.

  • Understand campus and community resources and serve as referral agent for students needing academic and personal assistance.

  • Assist in development of publications and resources.

  • Serve on campus committees as appropriate.

Teamwork

  • Support the mission and goals of the department and the institution.
  • Coach, mentor, and train part-time staff as necessary.
  • Approach conflict-resolution in an open, fair and professional manner.

Departmental Functions

  • Assist in the coordination of advisor training programs and academic standards processes and advisor assignment functions.
  • Seek student feedback through participation in individual and departmental evaluation processes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.  A combination of equivalent education and work experience will be considered.
  • Experience in educational/career planning, with an emphasis on providing transition services for individuals enrolled in Basic Skills (Adult Basic Education, English Speakers of Other Languages, High School Completion, etc).
  • Experience in working with under-represented populations and demonstrated commitment to enhancing their academic success.

  • Working knowledge of MS Office, the Internet, and/or electronic databases
  • Demonstrated record of working collaboratively in a team environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A clear understanding and appreciation of the training and educational opportunities, services, and resources available through the community college system.
  • Awareness of the complex and diverse needs of students attending community colleges and a working knowledge of student development theory.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a full time exempt position with an annual salary of $46,911.  Position includes an excellent state benefits package (health and dental plans, participation in TIAA-CREF Retirement Plan, 24 vacation days per year, 11 paid holidays per year, and 12 sick days per year, pro-rated based on percent of full time).  Other fringe benefits include tuition exemption, convenient daycare, and on-campus fitness center and the ability to participate in voluntary deferred compensation programs, Guaranteed Tuition Program and a flexible spending account (FSA) program .  Occasional work occurs during the evenings and on weekends.
