Topics included in the program include:

• American History, Politics, Democracy, Law and Justice
• Northwest cultures
• Education and Social Issues
• Electronic and Print Media and Popular Culture
• Leadership Training, Community Service
• Philanthropy and Volunteerism

We have chosen to focus on leadership and community service as the key elements of understanding American society. Leadership and Service are fundamental to the improvement of individuals, groups and societies, so much so that they warrant special attention in this program. We therefore have used them as ‘key themes’ in designing the curriculum for the 2008 Leadership Institute at GRCC. To this end, concepts and practices of leadership and service (Servant Leadership, to use Robert Greenleaf’s term) in the American context have led us to select the specific topics and sub-topics, which comprise this program.
