Program Overview

Expected Outcomes

As a result of completing the academic and educational travel program, you will possess greater knowledge of American society, its foundational principles, underlying values and supporting institutions – with a focus on leadership, the empowerment of women and the processes which effect change. The program will cover the various course topics from national and international perspectives, so that you appreciate how contemporary America has evolved; how women’s issues affect your role in society; and most importantly, how to lead in ways that make a difference in your own lives and those of others.

Through your interactions with faculty and staff, guest speakers, community representatives, local students and host families, you will gain an appreciation of American life and particularly how women’s roles and identities have evolved in the multicultural context which is modern America. Aligned with this – as one of the most fundamental program outcomes – will be a new appreciation of the importance of leadership for women, as well as opportunities to develop skills which will transfer to your home context and ideally have an effect in your future careers as leaders in organizations and communities.

During the visits and field trips which complement the academic program you will benefit from meeting with federal, state, county and city representatives in order for the knowledge acquired in class presentations and discussions to be grounded in current practice. A highlight is a visit with the Governor and Lieutenant Governor of Washington State in our capital of Olympia, where you will also meet with judges of our State Supreme Court.  We have also appointed three female students with the necessary cultural sensitivity and ability to assist you at all stages of the program and in connecting with the local community.

There is also time for fun.  You will arrive just in time for our Independence Day Celebration on July 4th.  This is one of our grand holidays with fireworks and family fun. On other days, we are planning to see a Seattle Storm Women's Basketball Game and visit a Native American Village for a traditional salmon roast, carving demonstrations and a cultural dance performance. There are also street fairs, county fairs and farmer’s markets, barbeques and other family activities planned while you are here with us.
