Accessing databases

The databases available through Holman Library are accessible without any login or password at the first computer table (a.k.a. "I pod") just past the Information/Reference Desk.

All databases must be accessed from the Holman Library Web site.  Database logins are not required on campus.

The complete database list can be found under "Find Articles & More - Research Databases" on the library home page at http://www.greenriver.edu/library/. Most of these databases will require input of your student ID number when accessed from an off-campus location.

Librarians can help students learn to search these databases.

Accessing library information

Connect to the library home page at http://www.greenriver.edu/library/. This is the default home page for computers in the Technology Center and the Library.

All databases must be accessed from the Holman Library Web site. The research databases are accessible from off campus by logging in with your student ID number.

Students can search the Holman Library Catalog (book and video catalog) without entering their student id number.

Remote (Kent or Enumclaw) and eLearning students can access library information from their home or other computers.

Wireless

A wireless connection to the Internet is available in the library. Ask for setup instructions and help at the Information/Reference Desk. Instructions for wireless access are available.

If you have a laptop that is not wireless-ready, you can check out a wireless adapter at the Circulation Desk downstairs. You will still need to use the setup instructions to get connected.

Printing

  1. Use the File menu and select Print, (or from the desktop, Control p),
  2. Adjust printer choice (default is black and white, color and poster printing are options), page range to print, and number of copies,
  3. When all options have been completed, click OK.
  4. Another screen will appear showing you the number of pages and cost in points. Click "Print". (If this second screen does not open, your computer has an error and your job will not print. Report this immediately to the librarian.)
  5. Now move to one of the four Print Release Station computers, (three in the main InfoCom room and one in the classroom), which are identified by a lime green sign on top.
    1. Log in to the Print Release Station computer exactly as you are logged in at your current computer using your student ID and password.
    2. Highlight the print job (or several at once using the Shift key) and click on the word "Print".
    3. The print job begins immediately and your print allocation will be charged for the number of pages printed. The current balance shows at the bottom of the print screen.
    4. Color print jobs can be released only at the Color Release Station nearest the Reference Desk.
    5. Color printing is 10 points per page; black and white is 1 point per page. Prints on the plotter are 100 points per page.
    6. Your printing allocation is used only to manage printing. See My printing allocation for more information.

    Printer Paper

The Info Com printers generally use letter size (8 1/2 x 11) paper. You must provide your own paper to print on legal size paper.

Photo paper used in the color printer MUST be for a laser printer. You cannot use ink jet paper in any printers in the Library.

Double side printing requires the help from the student assistant - ask at the Reference Desk.

    Printing allocation

Each student receives a print allocation credit of 500 points for printing at the beginning of each quarter. If you use all of the credited amount you can add money inserting cash into the value added station (on the wall near the reference desk or in the Tech Center). Unused points accumulate until the end of summer quarter.

In January 2010, GRCC changed print systems. We were unable to globally move accumulated allocation into the new system. However, when your print allocation drops below 100 points, your total from December 2009 will be manually credited to your account

    Printing Problems

Report any printing problems to a librarian or student assistant.

There are many reasons documents don't print. If it fails to print the first time, DO NOT release the the print job again.

Please let the librarian or student assistant fix empty paper trays, paper jams, toner or other problems. DO NOT attempt to fix the printer yourself.

Saving files

To save a document you have created, select File, Save As.  In the “Save In” dropdown menu, select either

  • “3 ½ floppy A:” to save on your disk
  • Your student ID number to save on your H:\ drive
  • “DVD/CD-RW Drive” to burn to a CD
  • "Removable disk" to save onto your USB drive.

You can access your saved files several ways.  One way is to click on the “My Computer” icon on the computer desktop.  You will see links to the available drives.

Not all USB (Flash, Thumb, etc.) drives work equally well in the labs and library. Check out our recommendations.

Saving a large file

Students may borrow a USB storage device from the Circulation Desk downstairs for temporary storage of large files. Look at Loan Periods for Students for details.

Students also can save files to a storage location on a campus server (your "H:\ drive") under their own student ID number. Ask a librarian or student assistant if you need help using this method.

Protecting the data on my floppy disk

With regular use, a floppy disk's average life span is only about six months.

See Floppy Disk Information for more.

Flash drives (USBs) are a more reliable way to save your data. Removing a USB drive without ejecting it can scramble the drive (very rare, but it does happen). Take a few seconds to Don't forget to take them with you when you leave.

Playing my CD

Audio (music) CDs can be played on library computers. You must use headphones in consideration of others. Headphones are available at the Reference Desk for check out with their Student ID card.

Most CD ROMs that accompany textbooks must be specifically loaded to be accessible in the library. Many class CD ROMs are already loaded on the library's computers. Those that are currently set up are listed under Start Menu: Programs: Programs for Classes: Textbook CDs. If yours isn't on that list, talk to a librarian.

School supplies vending machine

There is a vending machine supplied by the Paper Tree bookstore, located on an interior wall near the Information/Reference Desk. The machine accepts $1, $2, and $5 bills (old face). The library does not have change.
