Media Center Information for Faculty
Equipment PurchaseMedia Services orders equipment on a continual basis. We supply all the classrooms with audio-visual equipment. This includes televisions, VCR's, screens, slide projectors, computer carts, data projectors, overhead projectors, and 16mm projectors. One of our goals is to have every classroom on campus with a minimum of a television, VCR, screen, and overhead projector. For the larger rooms, a ceiling mounted data projector is planned. All audio-visual purchases must be approved by Media Services. After completing your purchase requisition:
Equipment RequisitionsWe also search for equipment according to different departments' needs. If you give us the specifications that you need, we will try to find the equipment for you. Often, we can get special pricing for equipment that is not available to the public. We can even start the purchase process for you. We can generate the purchase order, send it to the department for approval, then send it to the business office. Since we have already signed the purchase order, the ordering process is shortened greatly. Equipment Set-UpMedia Services will also set up your equipment for you. All you have to do is ask when you make your reservation. Our staff and workstudy students will try to make using our services as easy as possible, including equipment set-up and demonstration. If you require your students to learn how to operate a particular piece of media equipment, please call to set up an appointment with an IMC staff member. These types of equipment demonstrations are generally taken care of between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Equipment ListThe following equipment is available from Media Services:
Please call our office if you have specific questions about available equipment. Equipment Repair and TroubleshootingIf audio-visual equipment on campus needs to be repaired (such as equipment in the classroom) please call our office. We will try to fix the problem. If we cannot fix the problem we will temporarily replace the equipment (if possible), get the original equipment fixed, then return it to the original room. If you are having trouble operating the equipment in your room, we will come to the classroom and show you how to operate the item successfully. You can also make an appointment for a demonstration at the Media Services office. Media RentalIf Media Services does not have a particular video tape or film that you need for your class, we will be happy to rent it for you. We deal with a number of other colleges and institutions that have rental services available. We generally need two to three weeks advance notice to get a rental title. Occasionally, the video or film that you need will not be available when you need it. You may be asked to give an alternate showing date. When we rent titles from off campus sources, we usually have them from three to ten days, depending on the vendor. If you are unable to show the video or film during that time, we need to call for an extension of our rental time. If the video or film is available, we can keep it. However, if someone else needs to use the title, we must return it by the original due date. Rental video or film titles range from $10.00 to $250.00 per use. Therefore, it is very important that you use the film on the pre-determined date. Media PurchaseMedia Services also purchases video tapes for instructors. If the tape you wish to purchase is available we will try to purchase it for you. Some titles are not available, or are out of print. In order for us to purchase a particular title we need as much information as possible. Include the copyright date, vendor (if available), running time, and subject matter. We can also do a search for you. Just give us the subject and a general description of what you are looking for, and we will try to get you some choices of titles to use in the classroom. The prices of these video tapes differ greatly depending on availability, vendor, and subject matter. Generally, titles that you see on television are much more economical than specialty videos. Specialty videos can cost up to $800.00 per tape. Plan you purchases accordingly. Media Services has a limited budget for media purchases. If we are out of money, you will be asked to pay for the tape with division funds, or wait until the next fiscal year to purchase the tape. If Media Services purchases the tape for you, the tape is housed in Media Services Videotape Library. If your division purchases the tape, you can keep it wherever you like. Media RequisitionsMedia Services will generate all Media Purchase requisitions if a purchase is requested through our office. We also sign-off on all media purchases across the campus. (See Equipment Purchase for full description.) Media CatalogingAll titles in Media Services Video Library are listed on the Holman Library database. When we receive a new title, we enter all pertinent information into the database. This way anyone on campus can access the database and see what titles are available. Media Services has a much more detailed list in our office as well. We can also send you a list of titles. Of course, our office is more than happy to help you in person. When you come into the office with video tape questions or ask us for a search, we can give you much more information, including a full description and running time, or the tape. Reserving Equipment and MediaYou can reserve equipment or media. Please call the Media Center at ext. 2108. You can send us email from Outlook using "Media Center" in your address line.
