Floppy Disk Information

Did you know?
With regular use, a floppy disk's average life span is only about six months.

Floppy disks are susceptible to damage from:

• Magnetism
• Mobile telephones, computer monitors, electric motors, televisions, hi-fi speakers
• Temperature, sun light, radiators, rapid temperature changes
• Environmental hazards, rain, dust, hair, food

A floppy disk should never be trusted as a sole back up. You should:

• Keep disks in a proper disk container
• Keep up-to-date copies of important data on alternate drives or duplicate disks
• Make sure that virus protection software is active on all the computers you use (your disk is scanned for viruses every time you use it in the library, but failing to have virus software at home can lead to significant damage)
