Finding a book, video, music or periodical recommended by an instructor

Search the Holman Library catalog either by title, author, subject or keyword to locate books or other materials. If it's a non-library item placed on Course Reserve by an instructor, you'll need to search using the "Course Reserve" tab in the catalog.

 Ask a librarian for assistance.

Accessing databases on the library computers

The databases available through Holman Library are accessible without any login or password at the first computer table (a.k.a. "I pod") just past the Information/Reference Desk.

The complete database list can also be found under "Find Articles & More - Research Databases" on the library home page at http://www.greenriver.edu/library/.

Librarians can help students learn to search these databases.

Accessing library information from home

Connect to the library home page at http://www.greenriver.edu/library/

Students can search the Holman Library Catalog (book and video catalog) without entering their student id number. The research databases are also accessible from home by logging in with your student ID number.

Remote (Kent or Enumclaw) and eLearning students can access library information from their home or other computers.

The Reference section

Reference books are specialized dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc. that are not designed to be read straight through. The Reference section is the set of shelves nearest the Information/Reference desk, just to the east (to the right at the top of the stairs). All books in this section have the letter R at the beginning of the call number. On the library map of the second floor, the Reference section is labeled with a "1".

Reference books may be used in the library only.

Magazines, Journals and Newspapers

Current issues of most periodicals are on display shelves in the southeast corner of the library's second floor (labeled with a "6" on the map).

Older issues are stored in the stacks on the east side of the library (labeled with a "5" on the map). Both areas are arranged alphabetically by title.

Periodicals, newspapers and magazines may be used in the library.

Books I can check out

Most of the books that can be checked out (circulated) are stored in the "Main Collection of the library; located on the east side of the second floor,  nearest the east windows. This area is called the Main Collection (labeled with a "2" on the map of the library's second floor).

There are some books available for check-out that are stored in other locations on campus. Always note the Location information on the book record in the catalog before going to the shelves.

There is no limit on the number of books you can check out.

DVDs and VHS videos

The DVD cases are stored on the shelves at the south end of the library's second floor. They are arranged alphabetically by title. The DVD section is labeled with an "8" on the map of the library's second floor.

To find a VHS video, you must search in the Holman Library Catalog, or use the tile list. The video title list is located in a note book by the DVDs. Ask a librarian for assistance.

You can check out two (2) DVDs or VHS videos at a time.

The music (CD) section

The music CDs are located on the first floor of the library near the Circulation Desk. The music CD section is labeled with a "CD" on the map of the library's first floor.

Checking out a book or other item

BOOKS, CDs and DVDs: Take books, CD cases or DVD cases to the Circulation Desk on the first floor (see first floor map).

You must have your student ID card to check out items from the library. If you do not yet have a student ID, you can have one made at the Circulation desk.

VHS VIDEOS: Write down the "VT...." call number for the video and take it to the Circulation Desk. The staff will retrieve the video for check out.
