Projects in the Funding Pipeline 2005-2011

2005-2007 Biennium, Projects scheduled for construction:

  • Science Building

A new Science Building will replace the existing ST complex. The pre-design stage was completed in spring 2002, and the design and permit stage was completed in spring 2005. Construction began during summer 2005, with a projected completion of spring 2007. 2005-2007 Biennium, Projects in the Pre-Design and Design Phases:

  • HS, SS, BI Complex Replacement: Pre-Design

The six buildings that comprise the HS complex (HSA, HSB, HSC, BI, SG and SS) were built in the late sixties and have exceeded their life cycles.  They are no longer able to support the instructional needs of the institution.  A replacement is needed.

This replacement project is also responding to needs expressed in the college Instructional Plan. The plan identifies an overwhelming need for modern classroom space as well as faculty offices.

The new classroom building will consolidate classroom and office locations, enhancing the student experience.  The facility will match the quality of recently completed campus projects with an emphasis on sustainable features.  The new facility will serve the Business, English, Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Science Divisions with adequate classrooms and labs, offices and support spaces that allow the college to better meet the needs of its students.

The new facility will be built on the site of the existing ST complex, which is being replaced by the new science building. The ST complex and OEB will be removed at the beginning of the HS replacement construction phase. This location is ideally situated in the heart of campus, adjacent to the Science, Math and Technology complex to the south and the Rutkowski Learning Center and the Performing Arts buildings to the north.  Also, using the ST site reflects our desire to uphold the Master Plan Principle to preserve the natural environment of the campus through continuity of architecture and control/management of green and open spaces.

A larger building will enhance the Green River experience, creating gathering spaces for interaction between different building user groups, a key component of the Facilities Master Plan. The new facility will be approximately 68,000 gross square feet, an increase of 13,000 over the existing HS complex. The increase in square footage will allow for the replacement of undersized classrooms and labs.

Pre-Design is scheduled for the 2005-2007 biennium and with state funding, design and permitting occurring in 2007-2009 followed by construction in 2009-2011.

  • PE Building Design

The Physical Education Building was constructed in 1967.  Many of the building components are old and in disrepair and no longer serve the instructional needs of the college.  Many of the program spaces, designed for early curricula, are no longer adequate for current philosophies of instruction.  The building does not comply with modern life safety codes nor does it provide adequate access to students with disabilities.

The Physical Education Building has been identified in the Instructional Plan and the Facilities Master Plan as one of the College’s “core” buildings. The college foresees continued use of this building for physical education instruction into the foreseeable future.

The failure of key components of the building, inadequacy of program space for current instructional needs, and the life safety defects from the original construction cannot be ignored.  The severity of the need for building upgrades is supported by the 2005-2007 Facilities Survey “Building Condition Rating.”

A comprehensive renovation of the Physical Education building will replace the failing infrastructure components; renovate facility spaces to meet current instructional, ADA, and Title IX compliance needs; and replace or augment life safety features of the building to ensure compliance with current codes.  The goal of the proposed renovation is to extend the useful life of the Physical Education building for at least another 30 years.

This renovation project will have a major impact on the delivery of instruction to a majority of Green River students.  All of the academic degrees as well as the college-awarded high school diplomas require fitness-related activities. In addition to classroom usage; the facility is used on an annual basis for commencement ceremonies in June, and the college’s Artist & Speaker series.  The college also rents the space to the community for larger events or conferences.  GRCC strongly supports college athletic events and hosts conferences in basketball and volleyball as well as NWAAC Tournaments such as women’s volleyball.

Design and permitting will occur from July 2005 – June 2007. Construction will occur during the 2007-2009 biennium.  Some of the needed renovations will require closure of the major program areas for several months so planning will be required to limit the closure of the facility to the summer months.

  • Student Success Center Design

After much consideration and a process gathering of feedback, Green River has decided to expand to include a Student Success Center, which will include an expanded Assessment & Testing Center and a Welcome Center. This new facility will serve all students and facilitate college entry for potentially at-risk students.

The new Testing/Assessment Center will include general testing rooms, DSS related testing areas, support staff areas, and storage. Services will include classroom testing, Compass Assessment, GED, certification, and distance learning class testing, as well as assessment of learning outcomes and possibly some new areas of testing dictated by the needs of the community.

The Welcome Center will directly support entering students. Because many students are discouraged when they receive their Compass assessment, for example, advisors will be on hand to help them understand that they can use these results to enroll in appropriate courses. Among the services offered will be admissions, advising, counseling, career guidance, and resource referral. Students could ask questions and be directed to the appropriate office (e.g., tutoring, financial aid, housing). Students will be available to guide students to the appropriate campus office.

The new Center will be created by adding approximately 5,000 sq. ft. to the existing 4,800 sq. ft. OEA Building, allowing adequate space for several critical college programs. This center is a matching fund project with 50% of the costs provided by state funds and 50% by contributions to the Green River Community College Foundation. The design and permitting stage will occur July 2005 – June 2007 with construction to begin in summer 2007.
