Gator Basketball Back on Track
After Ice Storm Cancellations

With the mid-way mark of the 2012 basketball season in sight, the Green River men and women’s basketball programs prepare to host Pierce College on Monday the 30th in a rescheduled snow make up contest followed by Highline on Wednesday. Both the Gator teams sit at 3-4 in the first round of the NWAACC league standings but will look to take advantage of their home court this week to place themselves ahead of the pack for the playoff race.

On Saturday the Green River women took the short bus trip to Tacoma CC where they defeated the Titans 66-63 behind a 23 point, 11 rebound outburst by freshman post Sierra Haverfield. Sophomore Cecilly Phillips also secured her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Haverfield and Phillips both started their season at the beginning of winter quarter and have helped redefine the strengths of the squad. Head Coach Tim Riles will take the retooled Gators and a two game win streak into the most important week of this team’s season.

Meanwhile, the Gator men fought hard against a talented Tacoma team on Saturday but were defeated 72-86 for their four road loss of the league season. Sophomore Devin Willis led three players in double figures with 18 points. Sophomores Justin Lanier scored 16 and Chris Plooy added 14 but it would not be enough against TCC who shot 56% from the field. GRCC has won all three of their home games and will hope to continue that trend with their two league rivals Pierce and Highline coming to Auburn this week.
