(AUBURN, Wash. May 12) – The Washington State Small Business Development Network (WSBDC) has named DeAnna Burnett-Keener to its 100 Jobs Club and Million Dollar Club. Burnett-Keener is director of Green River Community College’s Small Business Assistance Center.

(AUBURN, Wash. May 4) – What happens when Neil Simon, several sheep, and the residents of Yelm all come together in one place? It will be mayhem, hilarious comic confrontations, and several opportunities for physical comedy, according to Elena Hartwell.

(AUBURN, Wash. April 22) — Green River student Mohammed Zahir Osman Kassam has been selected to receive one of the largest and most competitive scholarships available to undergraduates.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 15) — Cal Ebey, a student in the Computer Systems Administration – Network Technology degree program at Green River Community College, won first place in the A+ Hardware competition at the Pierce County 2005 Tech Competition.

(AUBURN, Wash. February 9) — The multi-award winning Broadway play “Man of La Mancha” will be presented by Theatre Extempore at Green River Community College, beginning March 11.

(AUBURN, Wash. November 17) — A documentary on the experiences of Japanese-Americans during World War II will have its Western Washington premier Tuesday, Dec. 7 at Green River Community College in Auburn beginning at 6:30 p.m.

(Auburn, Wash. September 20) To help ease parking lot overcrowding when fall quarter classes begin on Monday, Sept. 27, Green River Community College will provide off-campus parking and free shuttle service for students and employees.

(Auburn, Wash. August 2) More than 20 scholarships funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) are still available for fall quarter students at Green River Community College.

(Auburn, Wash. May 17) Green River Community College instructor Harry Rosemond has been honored with the “Outstanding Educator” award by the Northwest College Reading and Learning Association (NWCRLA).

(Auburn, Wash. April 23) The Washington State Small Business Development Center Network has honored Leslie Moore with the “STAR” Award for leadership.

(Auburn, Wash. April 6) Two Green River Community College carpentry students were recently awarded scholarships from the King and Snohomish Master Builder’s Association.

(Auburn, Wash. March 3) High school students and their parents are invited to attend a Running Start informational night at Green River Community College on March 16.

(AUBURN, Wash. November 18) Green River Community College mathematics instructor Dr. Stephan Kinholt has received a teaching excellence award from the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

(AUBURN, Wash. July 15) Green River Community College’s main campus entrance will be closed Tuesday, July 15th through September 5th for construction of a new college entrance and exit. The road work is part of the student housing project on the northeast side of campus.

(AUBURN, Wash. June 16) A gymnasium packed with relatives and friends celebrated the accomplishments of Green River Community College’s Class of 2003. More than 325 of the approximately 1,600 eligible graduates took part in the college’s 38th annual commencement.

(AUBURN, Wash. June 12) More than 300 students are expected to march at Green River Community College’s 38th Annual Commencement on Friday, June 13. The ceremony begins at 8 p.m. in the college gymnasium.

April 11) Green River tennis coach Steve Sauers reached an incredible milestone on Thursday (April 10) as he notched his 900th GRCC career coaching victory as the men’s team defeated Willamette University 6-0 in a non-conference match. Sauers is quick to credit the GRCC teams through-out the years for his coaching success.

(AUBURN, Wash. April 11) Saving more than 100 jobs and helping her clients receive more than $5 million in loans has helped DeAnna Burnett-Keener win the highest state honor from the Small Business Development Center Network.

(AUBURN, Wash. April 11) Christie Gilliland and Steve Kinholt teamed up on Thursday, April 10, 2003 to give a great presentation about Project Teach to the Auburn Noon Kiwanis, a local community service organization.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 31) Green River’s men’s tennis team won three out of four games in a trip to Arizona over spring break. The trip was a tune-up for the first league match of the season this Friday as the Gators host Treasure Valley at 6:30 p.m.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 27) Green River Community College sophomores Matthew Dean and Ian MacLurg were honored by Gov. Gary Locke in Olympia today as members of the All-Washington Academic Team.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 26) A delegation of broadcasters and officials from Belarus received a lesson on college radio and the training of broadcasting students during a meeting at Green River on Tuesday (March 25). The visitors met with Tom Evans Krause, broadcast instructor, and student leaders of KGRG.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 26) Jex and 11 other members of Green River’s Legislative Committee joined a dozen supporters of Highline Community College in voicing their concerns about continued funding of worker retraining enrollment slots and the two-year colleges’ capital budget requests.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 24) Green River Community College’s Board of Trustees received a commendation from the Washington State Auditor’s office on Thursday (March 20) for five straight years without an audit finding.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 17) More than 100 high school girls are expected on campus this week to sample programs in both trades and technology. The annual Try-A-Trade, Try-A-Technology event is intended to expose high school girls to a variety of non-traditional female occupations and careers, according to Jennifer Thornton, director of Tech Prep, which organizes the event.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 13) Students in Green River’s nursing program and the staff of the Weatherly Inn, an assisted living facility in Kent, celebrated the close of winter quarter with a potato bar lunch yesterday (March 12). Nursing students have been assisting at the site as part of their community lab class.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 12) Green River engineering students participated in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Puget Sound chapter annual ASME Student Paper Competition last night at the Spaghetti Factory in Seattle. This competition helps prepare students for the Old Guard Oral Presentation competition at the Regional Student Conference.

(AUBURN, Wash. March 10) — Students in Green River’s Design Drafting program will be raising public awareness about their program Tuesday and Wednesday (March 12-13) as part of Design Drafting Week.

(AUBURN, Wash. February 11) Theatre Extemporé closes out 35 years of student performances in the Performing Arts Building with its production of “Cabaret” set to open March 7. A new theater, set to open this spring, will replace the venerable PA stage.

(AUBURN, Wash, February 6) Green River Community College recently received a grant of 30 laptops and 4 laser printers from Boeing Surplus. These computers will be used to create a laptop lab at Skillstream. The computers will allow Skillstream to have more flexible classroom space in their facility as well as to take customized training “on the road” to area businesses.

(AUBURN, Wash, February 3) The top local high school carpenters dueled with hammers and saws at Green River Community College as the Carpentry Technology program hosted the Puget Sound Regional Carpentry contest this past Saturday (Feb. 1).

(AUBURN, Wash, January 30) The next time you fly a Horizon Airlines flight, Chuck Niblack may be directing your plane’s operations.

(AUBURN, Wash, January 22) Campus parking will be at a premium and traffic in and around GRCC will be congested Thursday night (Jan. 23) as more than 2,000 people are expected at a Department of Social and Health Services community hearing at the College.

(AUBURN, Wash, December 13) Students in the Natural Resources program at Green River Community College will participate in a controlled burn to slash piles in woodlands south of the main campus on Dec. 18.

(AUBURN, Wash, December 12) Green River Community College and neighbors in Rainier Ridge have reached agreement on the college’s student housing project, meeting the needs of the college and mitigating the impact of nearby residents.

(AUBURN, Wash, December 11) Green River Community College Foundation has begun a $600,000 fund raising effort to build a new commons area featuring an outdoor amphitheater with seating for 250.

(AUBURN, Wash, December 9) Camella Morgan, director of technical services in information technology at Green River Community College, has been chosen to participate in the National Institute for Leadership Development, LEADERS program, an international program for administrators and faculty in higher education.

(AUBURN, Wash, December 5) The Interurban Center for the Arts, a division of the Green River Community College Foundation, is facilitating an exchange between Emerald Park Elementary School in Kent and Universidad Veracruzana Centro do Iniciacion Musical Infatil of Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.

Colleges Are An Investment In Our Future Richard A. Rutkowski October was not a good month for local employment news. Weyerhaeuser announced plans to cut 750 jobs from its Federal Way headquarters, which is more than 25 percent of that office’s work force. On the same day, Capital One said it would close its call center in Federal Way and lay off 117 employees.

(AUBURN, Wash, November 21) Green River Community College’s Computer Reporting Technologies program has provided a Communications Access Realtime Translation (CART) student caption the South King County SHHH (Self-Help for Hard-of- Hearing People) chapter meetings for the past 3 years. During their recent November meeting, the local SHHH chapter expressed their appreciation and presented the student volunteers with gift certificates made possible by a donation from a chapter member.

(AUBURN, Wash, November 14) Political science instructor Lloyd Jansen, Ph.D., will present an evening lecture focusing on alternatives to a possible war in Iraq at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18 in the Lindbloom Student Center at Green River Community College.

(AUBURN, Wash, November 8) John Patrick’s comic stage play “The Curious Savage” will be presented at Green River Community College for three weekends beginning Nov. 22.

(AUBURN, Wash, November 7) Students and employees at Green River Community College will honor veterans with the Third Annual Dog Tag Day on Friday, Nov. 8. Campus will be closed on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11.

(AUBURN, Wash, November 6) Green River Community College has been awarded a $30,000 grant to provide commuting alternatives for its employees. The grant was one of 25 awarded to employers in King County by Commuter Challenge, a non-profit organization affiliated with the Economic Development Council of Seattle & King County.

(AUBURN, Wash, November 2) Green River Community College was awarded two silver Medallion Awards at the annual District 7 National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR) Awards dinner held recently in Tacoma. The awards went to the 2002-2003 Student Handbook and the Quarterly High School Outreach Newsletters.

(AUBURN, Wash, October 30) With a record number of students seeking job retraining and projections that show an increase of traditional-age college students, officials at Green River Community College are hopeful that Gov. Locke and the Legislature will approve the 2003-05 capital budget request for community and technical colleges.

"Women and technology are a good match," she told WIHE. "Generally, their abilities to multi-task, structure their time and stay focused and organized blend well with the chaotic environment of IT. They also do very well with customer relations/interactions."

(AUBURN, Wash, September 10) — International Education is needed now more than ever.

(Seattle Times, Wash, September 10) —  Michelle Marshman, a history instructor at GRCC, led a professional-development workshop for the Kent school district's junior-high and high-school social-studies teachers before the start of school. She gave the 70-plus teachers a crash course on the history and politics of the Middle East.

(AUBURN, Wash, September 6) Green River Community College will be hosting an open house for parents and students interested in the Running Start program on Thursday, Sept. 12 from 6:30 – 8 p.m. in the Lindbloom Student Center.

(AUBURN, Wash, August 26) The Green River Community College Foundation board honored Bothell-based Leviton Manufacturing recently for donating $5,000 worth of Home Integration equipment to the Fiber Optics/Copper Cabling program at Skillstream.

(AUBURN, Wash, August 14) Green River Community College Foundation is pleased to introduce the four newest members of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. These members joined the board this fall and will serve 4-year terms.

(AUBURN, Wash, June 14) More than 340 students took part in the 37th annual commencement ceremony in front of nearly 2,000 guests at Green River Community College on June 14. The graduates were part of more than 2,200 GRCC students who graduated this year with degrees or certificates.

(AUBURN, Wash, April 15) – A federal appropriation of $250,000 has been awarded to Green River Community College to provide training for live television translation services through its Computer Reporting Technologies program.

(AUBURN, Wash, April 11) – Pamela Schmidt’s enthusiasm pours over into helping students in the Auburn School District develop skills to enhance their lives. Schmidt, a graduate of Green River Community College, is a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant.

(AUBURN, Wash, March 7) – Green River Community College students Anna St. Martin and Megumi Kuwabara were honored today in Olympia as members of the 2002 All-Washington Academic Team. A total of 63 community and technical college students from around the state were recognized for their academic excellence and community service.

(AUBURN, Wash, February 14) – Theatre Extempore will present the stage production of a 1930’s English thriller, “Night Must Fall,” beginning March 1, for two weekends. Performances will be Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., and Sundays at 7 p.m., in the Performing Arts Building at Green River Community College.
