Forest Education hosted by GRCC’s SAF Student Chapter |
The Biomass & Wildfire in Washington display.
The Society of American Foresters Student (SAF) Chapter at GRCC helped sponsor and host two events last Friday and Saturday. Both events were at Tahoma Jr. High School and in the surrounding King County forest near Ravensdale. “Forests on the Edge: sustaining greenbelts, open spaces, and parks into the future” was held on July 30. This event was targeted for educators, stewardship specialists, and community forestry advocates. A Family Forest Owners Field Day was held on July 31 at the same location, aimed for the 300,000 family forest owners that live in the region. For both events, the Student Chapter provided morning refreshments. The Biomass in Washington display was up, as well as the Wildfire in Washington display. These two large displays have been at venues such as the Puyallup Fair, the SAF national conventions in Orlando and Reno, the Washington Forest Protection Association annual meeting, the Natural Resources Building in Olympia, and WA-OR Leadership Conferences. Natural Resources program information was also provided.
Family Forest Owners Field Day - Chef Paula Kaiser was in charge of the two events.
On Saturday, the GRCC Student Chapter served 220 barbeque lunches of hamburgers, beans, potato salad, dessert, beverages. June graduate Paula Kaiser was in charge of organizing the two events, planning, buying, and preparing the lunch. The Student Chapter earned about $3,000 which will be used to send students to the SAF convention in Albuquerque in October.
