Green River's Project TEACH program is proud of Anastacia Nicole. Anastacia, who is also a former Green River employee, was featured on April 23, 2008 in the Kent Reporter. The article, "Kent Middle-School Teacher Gets National Nod" illustrates Anastacia's passion for teaching. Anastacia, who teaches 8th grade science at Mill Creek Middle School in Kent, has been selected as an associate fellow to the New Science Teacher Academy. The academy is based on a partnership between the National Science Teachers Association and the Amgen Foundation. It is designed to encourage and support new middle and secondary school science educators in their first few years of teaching. Anastacia is very excited about this opportunity. She said, "They've found that it takes five to seven years to really become a competent, effective science teacher. So the goal of the New Science Teacher Academy is to cut that down to three to five years." The academy recently paid for Anastacia to attend the National Science Education Conference in Boston, MA. She was one of only three teachers in the state to be selected to attend. She participated in classes taught by renowned scientists and educators and learned about the latest in science content, teaching strategies and research. She also got to network with other science educators.
