Lynwood Junior Wins Drag Race and Scholarship

Lynnwood High School junior Nick Douglas celebrates 2008 Green River Community College High School Drags win in victory lane.

Lynnwood High School student Nick Douglas raced to the top prize at the 2008 Green River Community College High School Drags earlier this month at Pacific Raceways defeating Chevy Kranz of Enumclaw High School in the final round.

For his win, Douglas secured a $1500 scholarship to Green River Community College. Douglas, a junior at Lynnwood, said he was considering Shoreline Community College before winning the scholarship to GRCC. He added that he will be back next year to defend his title and add to his scholarship. Kranz was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and Trevor Clements of Todd Beamer High School in Federal Way picked up the $500 semi-final scholarship.

Tahoma High School in Maple Valley dethroned Kentlake High School for the team title by scoring the most team points.

Despite a rainy forecast, the high school drag race attracted nearly 200 competitors and hundreds of spectators. Green River’s outreach staff was kept busy with the prize wheel and answering questions from high school students and parents. Auto instructor Dan Sorensen and students from automotive technology, auto body, and welding worked the event. Ron Riley, criminal justice instructor and huge drag racing fan, also helped out at the booth. The college’s supercharged Mustang GT drag race car made a couple of exhibition passes.
