Carpentry Students and Faculty Rebuilding Homes on the Gulf Coast

Seeds of Compassion.

This May, Glen Martin (GRCC Carpentry Faculty) and 11 carpentry students will travel to the Gulf Coast to rebuild homes that have been destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.  The group will be in Pass Christian, Mississippi (about an hour east of New Orleans), from May 6 to May 13, 2008.

Glen and our students will be partnering with Second Wave, a non-profit group that is working to “rebuild homes and restore hope after Hurricane Katrina”. Students will be able to utilize the skills they have learned at Green River to make major impacts on the lives of Gulf Coast residents.

Green River students are volunteering their time and are asking the community to help support this effort. The total cost to send 11 students and their instructor is $7,500. This covers airfare, lodging, food, and transportation for the week. Campus and community members can support this effort with contributions to the GRCC Foundation, designated to the Project HOUSE fund. (In fact, $80 will cover food for an entire week for a student!)

Green River employees can also make a one time gift through payroll deduction. Or contributions can be made through check, credit card, or on-line. Upon their return, this group of Green River Gators will share tales of their Gulf Coast efforts and possibly even a story or two about meeting real gators. We’re planning a post trip spaghetti dinner to help defray some of the costs and prepare for the next opportunity to make a difference. If you want to be added to the interest list for this event, please send your name to Connie Jones.
