Nancy Lane's Environmental Science and Biology 110 (Northwest Ecology) students continue to make a difference for the environment. These students not only learn about the difficult issues we face today, but they also work on solutions. Their efforts to restore some of Washington's salmon runs gained them the "2008 Volunteer of the Year Award" from Mid Puget Sound Fisheries Enhancement Group. This is not the first time, in 2004 Lane's students won "Best Youth Volunteer Group". Nancy Lane is committed to incorporating sustainability efforts into her curriculum and campus life. At the end of every quarter Lane assigns an environmental science service project to her students. The students decided what they would like to do to help preserve the environment. Last year her students beautified the campus by planting a sustainable garden outside the new Science Building and designing beautiful mosaic ashtrays to encourage smokers not to litter. "We have one of the prettiest campuses in Washington," said Lane. "We all want to keep it that way."
